FIRST, David J.
Died peacefully at home in Dumfries, Virginia on June 14, 2012. He was born April 16, 1951 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The family moved to Spokane, Washington where he lived until 1964. The family then moved to Rockville, Maryland where he graduated from Richard Montgomery High School. After high school he volunteered and served in the U.S. Army from 1971-1974, and was stationed in Germany.
Dave worked for 36 years for the U.S House of Representatives under the Chief Administrative Officer. He worked in the labor shop from 1975-1979 and in the carpet shop from 1979-2011. He retired in March 2011.
He was involved for over 35 years in the Prince William Soccer Association as a coach, administrator, and longtime referee. He coached youth boys’ recreational teams and youth girls’ traveling teams. He refereed soccer matches for high school and travel teams, including area tournaments, high school playoffs, and the State Cup tournament. Dave was passionate about the beautiful game of soccer.
Dave was a friend, brother, and father figure to his two younger brothers. He taught them the importance of fairness and friendship. He had friends and family spread all over the country and made frequent visits to them in Washington State, Colorado, and New England. He enjoyed watching many local club, high school, and college games of nearly any sport.
Dave lived a very modest life. He had an older bulky 21 inch TV locked onto his favorite sports shows. He was friendly and enjoyed conversing with neighbors and friends. His friends and family will miss the long conversations we always had with him.
Dave was preceded in death by his mother and father, Betty J. and William L. First. He is survived by his brothers, Joseph and Louis; nephew, Anthony; nieces, Margaret, Georgia, and Brittany; and uncle, Robert First.
A memorial service will be held at the Lake Ridge Canterbury Woods Center, 12184 Chaucer Lane, Woodbridge, VA, on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 10:00 AM. Memorial donations in Dave’s name may be made to ACTS, P.O. Box 74, Dumfries, VA 20926.
