G-Prep lacrosse players chosen for touring team

Two Spokane lacrosse players are hitting the road this summer. Gonzaga Prep seniors James Pelkie and Hayden Thomas have been selected as an attacker and midfielder, respectively, to play for the boys senior elite team with the Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Touring Teams, based in Burnaby, British Columbia. Brent Hoskins, the men’s lacrosse coach at Simon Fraser University (MCLA Division I), runs the BMS program, which was established in 2006 and is one of Canada’s top field lacrosse development programs. BMS will have five travel teams this summer: the boys U-13 elite, boys U-15 elite, boys junior elite, boys senior elite and girls high school elite, which will bring together more than 100 student-athletes from 27 communities across British Columbia and Washington. Scheduled tournaments are in Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. The boys senior elite team wraps up the 2012 BMS summer season in Baltimore, Maryland, July 16-22 at the invitation-only Champ Camp. BMS is the only program selected from Western Canada in the tournament’s 22-year history. Basketball The 16th annual Washington/North Idaho All-State girls basketball games were played on Saturday at West Valley High School. In the 1B/2B game, East beat West 77-70. Brewster’s Chandler Smith led the East team with 20 points and earned MVP honors and Reardan’s Chantel Heath added 12 points. The 1A East team defeated the West 77-69, led by MVP Ashley Knight (Colville), who finished with 22 points. Dani Failor (Post Falls) scored 15 points to lead the 1A West team. In 2A/3A action, the West All-State team beat the East 74-70. Pullman’s Emily Drake finished with 20 points for team East and Danielle Beltrame (Deer Park) added 11 points. Soccer The Spokane Shadow premier girls ’94-Moon squad lost 2-1 to the Redding (Calif.) Missfits Bandits in overtime at the 2012 U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV President’s Cup Championships in Arvada, Colo., on June 16. The Spokane team, which earned the bid to represent Washington state at the President’s Cup after winning the Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup in May, beat the Idaho Fly 4-0 in the quarterfinals. The team, coached by Kevin Moon, includes: Maddie Aldrich (Mead), Kathryn Imming (Mead), Kylie Drynan (Mead), Brittany Bruegeman (University), Alexis Butler (Gonzaga Prep), Rachel Ryan (Gonzaga Prep), Mackenzie Flynn (Lewis and Clark), Courtney Hossfeld (West Valley), Alyssa Lloyd (Mt. Spokane), Riley Richardson (Mt. Spokane), Sydney Nelson (Mt. Spokane), Hailiey McClure (Freeman), Katie McNair (Cheney), Brianna Sillivan (North Central) and Katie Bischoff (Ferris). Softball Two early morning downpours on Sunday washed out the final day of the Amateur Softball Association 16-U A Regional/National Qualifier at the Merkel Complex – forcing officals to determine the national-qualifying berths by records and runs allowed. The four teams headed to the ASA/USA 16-U A tournament in Montgomery, Ala., July 29-Aug. 5 are the Washington Hustle (Seattle), Oregon Panthers (Keizer), Oregon Blaze 95 (Aloha) and Oregon Fury (Independence). Spokane Dawgs-R were the top finishers among five local teams in the 20-team field, tying for ninth with a 2-3 record. Spokane Mudhens and the Diamond Black and Diamond Blue teams were in a tie for 13th and Dawgs-J tied for 17th. Wrestling Team Washington finished 11th in the nation in Greco Roman and 13th in freestyle at the Cadet national dual meet tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. The team, led by coaches Craig Hanson (East Valley) and Luke Leifer (North Central), included: Zac Hanson (88 pounds, East Valley), Aaron Klauder (106, Deer Park), Izaec Quintanilla (145, North Central), Cody Kiourkas (152, North Central), Kenny Martinez (182, East Valley), Michael Ferguson (195, Cheney), Tate Orndorff (220, University). Orndorff was undefeated in the tournament with a record of 16-0 (12 wins by fall) and earned All-America honors in both styles.
