Spokane boxer Welliver loses majority decision
Spokane heavyweight boxer Chauncy Welliver suffered a blow to his championship-fight hopes after losing a 12-round, majority decision on Thursday to journeyman Sherman “Tank” Williams in Macau.
Welliver (53-6-5), 29, absorbed his first defeat after 18 victories and reaching No. 5 in the WBC rankings and No. 8 in the WBO. The fight was scored 115-112, 119-110 and 114-114.
The fight was a defense of Welliver’s WBO China Zone and Asia Pacific titles.
Williams (35-11-2), 39, had his previous fight in January 2011 against Evander Holyfield for the WBF title.
