Sasquatch men lose in OT

DeShaun Freeman poured in a game-high 37 points on 15-of-24 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds and the Peninsula Pirates defeated the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch 96-91 in overtime in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges men’s basketball tournament on Sunday in Kennewick.

J.T. Terrell added 31 points and six boards for the Pirates (25-4).

Preston Wynne led the Sasquatch (24-5) with 28 points, but made only 7 of 25 shots. Marlowe Brim and reserve Luke Evans added 13 points for CCS, while Taylor Pettersen and Brady Bagby scored 11 apiece and Eric Holbrook scored 10. Wynne snagged a game-high 13 rebounds for the Sasquatch, who had a 49-38 advantage on the boards.

Spokane will play Yakima Valley today at 2 p.m. in a loser-out game.

Baseball

Steven Halcomb had four hits and swiped a pair of bases and Alex Stanford drove in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning triple as the unbeaten Gonzaga Bulldogs (10-0) rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks (5-5) at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio.

Andy Hunter (2-0) allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings of work to pick up the win for the Bulldogs.

Royce Bolinger had a double among his three hits and drove in four runs for Gonzaga. Billy Moon had three of GU’s 14 hits. Halcomb is on a career-best eight-game hitting streak.

Gonzaga heads to Albuquerque for a three-game series against New Mexico next weekend.

• Ian Sagdal drove in three runs and capped a three-run fifth inning with a RBI single to lead the Washington State Cougars (7-3) to a 7-3 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears (1-6) in the rubber game of a three-game nonconference series in Pullman.

Derek Jones had three hits, including a double, for WSU. Joe Pistorese (1-0) picked up the win with three shutout innings of relief.

WSU, which hits the road for its next eight games, opens a three-game series at UNLV on Friday.

• The Central Washington Wildcats (4-8) pounded out 29 hits and cruised to a 10-7, 9-7 nonconference doubleheader sweep over the Whitworth Pirates (6-5-1) in Ellensburg.

Gerhard Muelheims went 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs for the Whits in the three-run loss in the opener. Nick Motsinger went 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs in the nightcap.

Softball

The Whitworth Pirates (3-11, 1-7) picked up their first Northwest Conference win of the season when they won the second game of a doubleheader to split with the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (9-5, 7-1) in Parkland, Wash.

Stacey Hagensen allowed six hits and one run in a complete-game effort in the first game to lead the Lutes to a 5-1 win.

Heather Hesselgesser homered and doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Whits to a 6-5 win in the second game.

Golf

Jesse Salzwedel shot a 73-76 149 to tie for second place and help the Whitworth Pirates men tie for third at the PLU Invitational in Dupont, Wash.

Salzwedel finished one stroke behind Linfield’s Alex Fitch.

Linfield won the team title with a 607 total, 13 shots in front of PLU. The Whits finished 18 shots back.

• The Eastern Washington Eagles women finished last at the 15-team Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.

Caitlin Rice led Eastern with a 20-over-par 164 two-round total. EWU was 70 shots behind winner Eastern Michigan.

Football

The Spokane Shock finalized their Arena Football League roster and kicker Kenny Spencer was the final piece of the puzzle.

Spencer, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound AFL rookie, last kicked for the University of North Alabama in 2009.
