Men’s basketball: Gonzaga, the 2009 Maui Invitational champion, will return to the islands for the 2013 tournament, event organizers announced Tuesday.
The 2013 field will include former champions Syracuse and Dayton, plus host Chaminade, Arkansas, Baylor, California and Minnesota. Ticket information will be announced later.
• The U.S. Basketball Writers Association named Washington State’s Brock Motum to the All-District IX team, which includes Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Arizona and Alaska.
Washington’s Terrence Ross and Tony Wroten and Matthew Dellavedova of Saint Mary’s also made the team.
• Top Stanford associate head coach and former longtime Santa Clara coach Dick Davey, 69, is retiring after the season.
Davey, a four-time West Coast Confer- ence Coach of the Year, owns a 251-190 career record. He guided the Broncos to the NCAA tournament three times.
WSU, UI women open tonight
Women’s basketball: Washington State and Idaho are set to begin conference tournament play after wrapping up their regular-season schedules last week.
Eleventh-seeded WSU will face sixth-seeded Oregon State in the Pac-12 tournament opener today at 7:15 p.m. at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
The winner will face No. 3 USC on Thursday night in a quarterfinal matchup.
Fourth-seeded Idaho will kick off the Western Athletic Conference tournament against No. 5 San Jose State at 8:30 p.m. at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The Vandals swept the regular-season series, and will play the Spartans for the second time in six days.
