Hornets upset EWU women at Big Sky tourney
POCATELLO – Sixth-seeded Sacramento State upset third-seeded Eastern Washington 71-61 in the Big Sky Conference women’s basketball tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night.
The Eagles’ season ended with a 16-14 record after they shot just 32.5 percent from the field, including 18.8 percent (3 of 16) from 3-point range.
Conference MVP Brianne Ryan led the Eagles with 19 points, but made only 8 of 26 shots. Chene Cooper added 13 points and 10 assists. Ryan had 11 rebounds, and EWU outrebounded Sacramento 50-37, but that margin was not enough to overcome the Eagles’ poor shooting. Both teams had 27 turnovers.
EWU never led in the game but did tie it twice in the second half at 8:46 and 7:39. An 8-0 run gave the Hornets (13-17) a 10-point lead with 3:24 remaining.
Montana State 68, Montana 59: The Bobcats (19-10) went 6 for 10 from 3-point range in the second half to break open a tight game and defeat the Grizzlies (16-14). Katie Baker (Lake City HS) led Montana with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
