Multiple officers shot at North Idaho fugitive

Investigators said today that more than one officer fired at a North Idaho fugitive early Monday, killing him. Police previously had not confirmed whether one or multiple officers fired at Justin Earl Nicholas Todd, 33, after a chase began when an electronic monitor alerted law enforcement to Todd’s vehicle because of his fugitive status. The Post Falls police officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave as the investigation continues. Investigators today continue to conduct interviews and process evidence, which they said could take several days to complete, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department. Lab results can take several more weeks. The Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office will decide whether the shooting was justified. Investigators confirmed that the chased stopped in the St. Estephe Court cul-de-sac in west Hayden, where Todd struck an Idaho State Police trooper with his vehicle before he was shot dead. The trooper was knocked to the ground by the force of the car and received minor injuries. Todd, a longtime felon who was wanted on a felony warrant for eluding police, was pronounced dead at Kootenai Medical Center.
