St. Mary’s plans auction on March 24

St. Mary’s Catholic School will present its 40th annual auction March 24 at the Mirabeau Park Hotel, 1100 N. Sullivan Road.

A silent auction will kick off the event at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the live auction at 7.

The funds will be used for school scholarships and capital improvements.

Items on the block include a signed Gonzaga men’s basketball and tickets to “Disney on Ice.”

Tickets are $55 per person. There are also table sponsorships available.

Home school information meeting

Valley Christian School, 10212 E. Ninth Ave., will offer an informational meeting about its home-school program Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Parents can meet the teachers, see the school and hear stories about the program.

Valley Christian has offered the program for 20 years.

West Valley dance team competes

The West Valley High School dance team recently took part in a competition.

The E-Gals took first in the pom category, second in the hip-hop category behind Ferris and second in the drill category behind Lewis and Clark High School.

The team will take its show on the road to Yakima next week at the state competition.

The team’s adviser is Jodee Cahalan.

Band boosters plan dinner and auction

The West Valley High School Band Boosters will present a dinner and auction March 24 at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road.

This year the group will auction off a pumpkin seed from the largest pumpkin on record – 1,818.5 pounds – which was grown in 2011 by Jim Bryson and his 12-year-old daughter, Kelsey, of Ormstown, Quebec. The pumpkin received a lot of attention throughout North America. It was displayed at the New York Botanical Garden and made an appearance on “Live with Regis and Kelly.”

The seed is one of many items up for auction at the dinner that will be catered by Luigi’s.

West Valley DECA students advance

Students from West Valley High School’s DECA program recently competed at the state level and seven students qualified for the international competition in Salt Lake City April 28 through May 1.

Those students are Austin Harrison and Taylor Rollins for their sports promotion plan; Erica Agrella, Jamie Aguilar and Angela Fair for their community service project; and Ashlynn Sellers and Alex Stutzman for their merit awards program.

West Valley’s DECA adviser is Cheryl Perry.

Scholarship applicants sought

The Marsden Scholarship Committee is looking for scholarship applications from students with records of academic excellence in the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane.

The committee for the scholarship, administered by the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, chooses two students each year who may be awarded up to $20,000 over four years for college.

The deadline to apply is April 1.
