Tips for preparing emergency supply kit

The Spokane Regional Health District encourages residents to put together an emergency supply kit and have a family emergency plan in case of fire, flooding, severe storms or other emergencies.

Emergency supply kit should include:

• One gallon of water per person and pet per day for three days.

• At least a three-day supply of foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking. Also, a can opener and eating utensils.

• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and NOAA weather radio with tone alert.

• Flashlight and extra batteries.

• First-aid kit and whistle.

• Dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape.

• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties.

• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.

Family emergency plan should include:

• An out-of-town contact. This person may be better able to communicate among separated family members.

• Be sure every member of your family knows the phone number and has a cellphone, coins or prepaid phone card to call the contact.

• Teach family members how to use text messaging.

• Subscribe to Spokane County alert services.
