In brief: Federer, Azarenka win at Indian Wells

Tennis: Roger Federer defeated John Isner 7-6 (7), 6-3 to win his record fourth BNP Paribas Open title Sunday in Indian Wells, Calif., avenging a loss to the American who beat him in Davis Cup play.

Victoria Azarenka routed Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-3 for the women’s title in the WTA Tour’s first final between the No. 1 and No. 2 players since 2008.

Federer and Azarenka each earned $1 million, the richest winner’s checks in the tournament’s history. The runners-up earned $500,000 each.

Federer improved to 39-2 since last year’s U.S. Open, with his only losses to No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the Australian Open and the 11th-ranked Isner, who won on the Swiss star’s home turf last month.

Azarenka broke Sharapova six times in improving her record to 23-0 this year, the best start to a season since Martina Hingis went 37-0 to open 1997. The top-ranked Belarusian won her Tour-leading fourth title of the year.

Paul leads Clippers past Pistons in OT

NBA: Chris Paul scored nine of his 19 points in overtime and added a season-high 15 assists, carrying the Los Angeles Clippers to an 87-83 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Los Angeles.

Blake Griffin had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and he tipped in Paul’s missed layup with 19 seconds left in regulation before Paul swiped the ball from Tayshaun Prince to send it to overtime.

• Thunder whip Trail Blazers: Russell Westbrook scored 28 points, Kevin Durant had 26 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder began work on restoring their home-court dominance, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 111-95.

James Harden added 14 points for Oklahoma City, which moved to 10-1 this season in the game immediately following a loss.

• Jazz fend off Lakers: Paul Millsap scored 24 points, Enes Kanter added 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Utah Jazz handed the Los Angeles Lakers just their second home loss since Christmas, 103-99.

Rookie Alec Burks scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Jazz, who snapped the Lakers’ five-game winning streak.

NBA scoring leader Kobe Bryant had 15 points on 3-for-20 shooting for the Lakers, punctuating his horrific night by missing a tying 3-point attempt in the waning seconds.

• Heat wins 13th straight at home: Dwyane Wade scored 14 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, Chris Bosh added 23 points and the Miami Heat beat the Orlando Magic 91-81 to extend their home winning streak to 13 games.

LeBron James finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals for the Heat.

• Surging Suns beat Rockets: Michael Redd scored a season-high 25 points off the bench and the Phoenix Suns beat the Houston Rockets 99-86 in Phoenix for their fourth straight win.

Phoenix moved within a half-game of Houston for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

• Grizzlies eye Arenas: Gilbert Arenas will work out today for the Memphis Grizzlies, who are looking to bolster their backup point guard position.

Flyers snap Penguins’ 11-game win streak

Hockey: Scott Hartnell scored his second goal of the game with less than 1 second left in overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Penguins in Philadelphia, snapping Pittsburgh’s 11-game winning streak.

Hartnell took a nice cross-ice feed from Danny Briere to beat Marc-Andre Fleury with 0.9 seconds left on the clock.

The Penguins lost for the first time since Feb. 19.

• Blackhawks defeat Capitals: Rookie Andrew Shaw recorded his first two-goal game, and the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2 in Chicago for their third straight win.

• Flames fall in shootout: Cam Atkinson scored the shootout winner and Steve Mason made 28 saves after coming in for an injured Curtis Sanford as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in Calgary, Alberta.

• Whitney rallies Coyotes: Former Spokane Chief star Ray Whitney scored in the third period and added the shootout winner as the Phoenix Coyotes bounced back from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Raffi Torres also scored for the Coyotes, who passed Los Angeles and San Jose to take over the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

• Predators earn comeback win: Patric Hornqvist, Mike Fisher and David Legwand scored third-period goals and the Nashville Predators completed a four-game season series sweep of the Anaheim Ducks with a 3-1 victory in Anaheim, Calif.

Nashville tied idle Detroit for fourth place in the Western Conference standings.

• Boston College seeded No. 1: Boston College is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA hockey tournament.

Michigan, Union (N.Y.) and North Dakota also received top seeds for the tournament, which starts on March 24.

• Minnesota wins women’s title: Sarah Erickson scored two goals, Noora Raty stopped 42 shots and Minnesota beat Wisconsin 4-2 in the NCAA women’s hockey final in Duluth, Minn.

Amanda Kessel and Emily West also scored for Minnesota, which won its third national title and first since the 2004-05 season.

Nationals option Harper to Triple-A

Miscellany: The Washington Nationals optioned 19-year-old outfielder Bryce Harper to Triple-A Syracuse where he can get experience in center field.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said that the timing wasn’t right for the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft to make the team out of training camp.

• Smith concludes visit with Dolphins: San Francisco 49ers free agent quarterback Alex Smith has left the Miami Dolphins’ complex after a 5 1/2-hour meeting.

The Dolphins’ unexpected courtship of Smith came after they were spurned by Peyton Manning.

• Harkless to apply for NBA draft: A person familiar with the decision says St. John’s forward Moe Harkless, the Big East Rookie of the Year, has decided to apply for early entry to the NBA draft.

• Sado, Njoroge win L.A. Marathon: Fatuma Sado of Ethiopia won the Los Angeles Marathon women’s race, breaking her personal best by more than 2 minutes.

Kenya’s Simon Njoroge won the men’s race, his seventh victory overall and sixth in his last nine marathons.
