Recovering Doctors at a Las Vegas hospital decided to keep storied former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian overnight Wednesday for observation after a mild heart attack. A hospital spokeswoman said he is still doing “very well.” The 81-year-old former coach was having trouble with his oxygen levels and was being tested for pneumonia, his son, Danny Tarkanian, said.

Indicted A woman accused of stalking New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and shaking him down for $6,000 has been indicted, prosecutors said, but they didn’t disclose the charges. The indictment against Louise Neathway isn’t expected to be made public until a court date next month.

Died Football coach Ron Erhardt, the offensive architect of the New York Giants’ two Super Bowl titles under Bill Parcells, has died. He was 80. Under Erhardt, the Giants consistently had one of the NFL’s most productive rushing attacks. Erhardt was New England’s head coach from 1979-81, compiling a record of 21-27. He was 67-7-1 and won two college division national championships at North Dakota State University.

• Left-handed pitcher Mel Parnell, who spent his entire 10-year career with the Boston Red Sox and faced some of the best hitters of the 1940s and early 1950s, has died. He was 89. Parnell had a career record of 123-75. Parnell’s victories rank third in team history, behind Cy Young and Roger Clemens, who each had 192 victories.

Leaving Iowa State 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Royce White said he’s leaving the school after playing one season and declaring for the NBA draft. White led the Cyclones with 13.4 points and 9.3 rebounds a game this season.

Sidelined Oakland Athletics third baseman Scott Sizemore has undergone surgery on his left knee to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The 27-year-old Sizemore will miss the entire season.

Requested Arizona State leading men’s basketball scorer Trent Lockett has asked to be released from his scholarship so he can transfer and be closer to his ailing mother.
