Returning Men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody is returning to Northwestern for a 13th season. Carmody has led Northwestern to four straight winning seasons and four straight NIT appearances. The Wildcats finished 19-14 this season.

• Creighton sophomore star Doug McDermott said he’s not considering declaring for the NBA draft this year. McDermott averaged 22.9 points per game and was the Missouri Valley Conference player of the year.

Leaving Villanova junior guard Maalik Wayns will forego his final season of eligibility and remain in the pool of candidates for the NBA draft. Wayns scored 1,191 points in 95 games over three seasons at Villanova. He led Villanova in scoring this season at 17.6 points. The 6-foot-2 guard was second-team All-Big East.

Ordered A man accused of beating two New York Rangers fans in a brawl after the NHL Winter Classic in Philadelphia will be tried on assault charges. A judge ordered 32-year-old Glassboro, N.J., resident Dennis Veteri to stand trial following a preliminary hearing on Thursday in Philadelphia. The fight occurred outside a cheesesteak stand after the Jan. 2 game between the Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Announced The San Diego Padres announced that Jeff Moorad has stepped down as the team’s CEO. The club said Moorad will remain as the franchise’s vice chairman and will be responsible for overseeing the Padres’ involvement in the development of Fox Sports San Diego. Padres COO and President Tom Garfinkel will assume the CEO duties in the interim. Moorad owns 49 percent of the Padres. He and a group of investors were set to buy the remainder from majority owner John Moores in January, but fellow owners deferred a vote on the proposed transfer, saying they needed clarification on financial information.

Negotiating Florida State is negotiating with representatives of men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton to extend his current deal, a source said. He has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Illinois job.

Re-elected NFL Players Association chief DeMaurice Smith has been re-elected for another three-year term.

Out The Denver Nuggets say reserve guard Rudy Fernandez will undergo surgery on his lower back that will sideline him for the rest of the NBA regular season.
