Whitworth softball team splits doubleheader

Caylan Haehl went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs and Taylor Gilbert tossed a five-inning two-hitter as Whitworth’s softball team beat Augsburg 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap for a split of their doubleheader Thursday at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.

Gilbert, who had two strikeouts and allowed a walk, also drove in two runs in Game 2 for the Pirates (11-15).

Heather Hesselgesser went 2 for 3 with two RBIs in the first game for Whitworth, which lost 5-3 to the Auggies.

The Pirates conclude their trip to Arizona today with games against Carleton and Carthage.

Swimming

The Whitworth men finished 11th in the 400-yard medley relay at the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis.

The team of Wesley Walton, Rory Buck, Aaron Vaccaro and Nathan Ranno finished in 3 minutes, 22.67 seconds. The finish was good for 12 points and the Pirates moved up to 18th in the team standings.

Three Whitworth swimmers are scheduled to compete today. Buck will attempt to defend his title in the 100 breaststroke, Walton will race in the 100 backstroke, and Katherine Duvall will swim in the 100 backstroke.

Baseball

Gonzaga’s game against Hawaii in Spokane was postponed because of inclement weather. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, with Game 1 starting at 1 p.m. The series will begin today at 6 p.m.
