Obituary: Doherty, Katheryn L.T. “Katie”
Died peacefully March 19, 2012 in Spokane, WA. Katie was born September 7, 1918 in Quincy, MA to Mathilde and Edward Doherty. She is survived by her sister Ann Taylor of Spokane and eight nieces, seven nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Mary and Elaine and her brothers Edward and William.
Katie, a registered nurse, joined the Navy in 1953, serving a total of 29 years and reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. She received the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star. Following her career that took her to many locations around the world, she chose to retire in Walnut Creek in 1973. She moved to Spokane three months ago to be closer to her sister. She was an active member of St. Stephen Catholic Church and The Walnut Creek Historical Society. Katie loved being surrounded by flowers; she had an extensive garden with numerous rose bushes at her home. She arranged flowers for St. Stephen Church for many years and was an active participant at Shadelands Museum Ranch as a docent and gardener. Katie will be remembered for her enthusiasm for traveling, cooking and gardening and her generosity to family and friends. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Stephen Church, Walnut Creek, Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 11:00am. Donations in memory of Katheryn can be made to St. Stephen’s Church or The Walnut Creek Historical Society.
