Obituary: Berry, John Douglas

Age 86

BERRY, John Douglas

Was born on March 12, 1926 in Van Nuys, CA and passed away on March 24, 2012 in Spokane, WA at the age of 86.

John was loved by many and was noted for his humble dedication to his family, community and to the welfare of others.

As John was a contractor in Spokane, he was able to carve out a living to support his many varied interests, family and organizations.

He was married to Joyce Berry for over 60 years and raised two children, Michael and Marilyn Berry.

The amazing talent of John was that there was always something to do, a project to be completed, and something to learn.

The title given is “MacGyver” who could fix nearly anything, wire something together for a purpose and tape up a broken item for a better use.

This not only applied to tools, cars or home projects but to human life also.

In his humble way, he would support many people in such a quiet way, how life could be so easily enjoyed, dreams accomplished and relationships mended without regard to himself.

He was a giver to humanity through organizations like the Lions Club and the Spokane Navy League.

The Navy League was his passion as a Navy veteran from WWII.

It was one of the greatest joys to be flown back to Washington D.C. as a vet on the Honor Flight with Southwest Airlines.

His humble service to mankind cannot be described in any amount of words, but nevertheless, the greatest gift that many have enjoyed is the fact that whoever crossed his path was blessed by the selfless giving of a sweet, loving and dedicated man.

It was even apparent right up to his last day that all would be cared for.

Life is far better for the gift of life that John brought to the world.

He will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Joyce Berry.

John is survived by his son Michael; daughter Marilyn; grandchildren: Joseph Berry, Cassie Fagen, Kaaren Burk, Kirsten Berry; and two great-grandchildren: Aidyn Frederick and Emmie Fagen.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 2, 2012 at 2:00PM at Heritage Funeral Home.
