One big inning sparks Cougars

Collin Slaybaugh drove in two runs in a decisive sixth inning and Washington State held on to beat Portland 4-2 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.

The Cougars scored all four of their runs in the sixth.

Kyle Swannack started and pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Cougars. Kellen Camus earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

With the win, Washington State improves to 24-20. The Pilots fall to 23-17.

Track and field

Idaho decathlete Andrew Blaser is in first place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Multi-Events Championships in Moscow.

Blaser won all five events, which included a career-best time of 49.64 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

For the women, the Vandals’ Johanna Hocketstaller is in third place with 3,030 points.

Women’s golf

Whitworth’s Emily Guthrie shot an 8-over-par 80 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.

Guthrie started on the back nine and shot a 42. A birdie on the par-5 seventh hole helped her turn things around as she shot a 38 on the front nine holes.

The second round will be played today.

Honors

The Gonzaga Bulldogs’ Victoria Fallgren was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month in women’s golf.

Fallgren defeated Seattle’s Caitlin McCleary in a playoff to win the WCC Golf Championship last month at San Juan Oaks Golf Course in Hollister, Calif. She finished with an 8-over-par 224.

• Gonzaga baseball player Royce Bolinger was named the Rawlings WCC Player of the Month after posting a .400 batting average with four home runs, 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored during April.
