Wildcats clinch state berth

Drew Rasmussen pitched a complete-game shutout and Mt. Spokane clinched a spot in the state playoffs with a 1-0 win over Kamiakin in a 3A subregional game Tuesday at Mt. Spokane.

Rasmussen surrendered just three hits.

Nate Spurbeck had two of the five hits for the Wildcats (17-6), who will play Kennewick in the subregional title game Saturday at Mt. Spokane to decide the top two seeds to state.

Kennewick 2, University 0: The Titans couldn’t string together any hits and fell to the Lions in Hanford.

Austin Sturgis pitched the complete game for University (9-15), which saw its season come to an end.

5A District 1

Coeur d’Alene (22-2) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and earned a berth to the state playoffs with an 8-2 win over Lewiston in Coeur d’Alene.

The Bengals, who were limited to just four hits, will play Post Falls on Thursday for the final playoff berth.

Post Falls advanced with a 6-5 win over Lake City. The Timberwolves’ season has concluded.

3A District I

Cameron Taylor had three hits and three RBIs and Alex Awbrey pitched a complete game as Bonners Ferry beat visiting Kellogg 8-4 in an elimination game.

Awbrey had 13 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run. The Badgers play at top-seeded Timberlake on Friday.

District 7 1A

James Mitchell pitched a complete game and drove in two runs at the plate to help Lakeside stay alive with an 8-1 win over Okanogan in Moses Lake.

Mitchell struck out 10 batters and allowed one run on six hits.

The Eagles advance to play Cashmere on Saturday in Eastmont.

Colville 7, Cascade 6: The Indians staved off elimination with a win over the Kodiaks in Moses Lake.

Colville (11-7) will play Chewelah (11-7) on Saturday in Wenatchee.

Softball

Lake City’s Casey Stangle stymied Lewiston’s hitters as the Timberwolves (21-1) clinched a berth to the state playoffs with a 3-0 win in the 5A Regional title game in Coeur d’Alene.

Stangle allowed just four hits.

Coeur d’Alene 13, Post Falls 1: The Vikings hit three home runs and stayed alive with a rout of the Trojans at Finucane Park in Coeur d’Alene.

The Vikings (15-5) will play Lewiston in a loser-out/winner-to-state game on Thursday.

Lake City 11, Post Falls 0: Haley Jackson had three hits, including a home run, as the Timberwolves blanked the Trojans (0-21) in five innings in Coeur d’Alene.

District 7 2A

Jackie Lucas struck out seven in a complete game and drove in two runs as No. 4 East Valley (8-12) jumped ahead early and beat No. 5 Deer Park (6-12) 5-4 in an elimination game at East Valley.

The Knights scored all five of their runs in the first two innings. They’ll play at top-seeded West Valley at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Clarkston 10, Medical Lake 3: Alaina Wicks had two hits and drove in three runs as the third-seeded Bantams eliminated the sixth-seeded Cardinals in Clarkston.

The Bantams will play at No. 2 Cheney at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Golf

Clarkston had the top three individuals and won the team title at the District 7 2A boys tournament at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Clarkston.

The Bantams’ Tyler Carlson claimed medalist honors after shooting a 68. Clarkston’s Michael Baldeck was second with a 70 and Joe Baldeck was third with a 79. East Valley’s Ryan Brown also shot a 79.

Clarkston finished with a team score of 390. Pullman (417) was second, followed by Cheney (438), East Valley (469), West Valley (503), Deer Park (513) and Medical Lake (599).

The top 20 individuals earned a spot in the regional tournament.

• Deer Park’s Selena Lewis earned medalist honors with a round of 90 and the Stags claimed the title by 21 strokes at the District 7 2A girls tournament at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Clarkston.

Deer Park finished with a team score of 508, followed by East Valley (529), Pullman (550) and Cheney (564).

East Valley’s Erin Wallman finished second with a 94. Deer Park’s Drew Petroske and Steffi Cunningham tied for third with 97s.
