Parking lot sale for horse program

SPOKANE COUNTY – The I Can Horse Co-op annual parking lot yard sale will begin today at Aslin-Finch Feed and Pet Supply, 10505 N. Newport Highway, from noon to 7 p.m. The sale will continue Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The I Can program uses horses to build confidence in children who have been neglected or abused and helps them develop compassion for animals. The program also creates a sanctuary for unwanted and abused horses.

Nominees sought for YMCA awards

SPOKANE COUNTY – The YWCA of Spokane is accepting nominations of local women who excel in their field of expertise and whose achievements have had a powerful effect on the Spokane community for the 2012 YWCA Women of Achievement Awards.

Categories include of arts and culture; volunteer community service; social and racial justice; professional; and young woman of achievement (high school senior, graduating in 2013). Nominees should embody the mission of the YWCA through dedication to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice and freedom.

The awards will be presented on Oct. 25 at the 30th annual Women of Achievement Benefit Luncheon.

Fundraiser planned for NFL’s Gleason

SEATTLE – Gonzaga Prep alumni and friends will host “Game on for Gleason,” a benefit for Spokane native Steve Gleason, at Safeco Field in Seattle on Saturday, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Gleason is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Gleason was an athlete at Gonzaga Prep and Washington State University. The longtime Spokane resident went on to play for the New Orleans Saints from 2000-’07. He retired from the NFL in 2008.

Tickets for the Seattle fundraiser, which includes drinks, appetizers and a silent and oral auction, are $80, if purchased in advance, or $95 at the door. All proceeds benefit Gleason and his family.

Monument will be dedicated today

SPOKANE COUNTY – Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery will dedicate a monument of Mary Caroline Davidson Seymour, an early Spokane Police Department jail matron, today at 2 p.m.

Seymour served from 1910 to 1932. The event is open to the public.

The cemetery is at 211 N. Government Way.

‘Blithe Spirit’ rescheduled

CHENEY – Because of a family illness, StageWest Community Theatre has rescheduled its production of “Blithe Spirit,” at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 639 Elm St. Performances will be May 18-19, May 25-26, and June 1-2 at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees will be on May 27 and June 3 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, age 65 and older. Tickets may be purchased at the Owl Pharmacy in Cheney and Medical Lake or online at www.stagewestct.org.
