UI men win WAC track championship
The Idaho men’s track and field team took first place Friday at the Western Athletics Conference Championships in Moscow, Idaho.
The title was the Vandals’ first outdoor team title since 2001.
Along with winning the decathlon on Wednesday, Andrew Blaser won the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 13.98 seconds on Friday.
The Idaho women took second place. Erica Digby led the way for the Vandals with wins in the 1,500 (4:29.92) and 5,000 (17:14.44).
• Eastern Washington senior Kyle King won the 10,000-meter run on the opening day of the Big Sky Conference Championships in Bozeman, Mont.
The win was the Eagles’ first in that event.
The meet concludes today.
Baseball
Stanford 3, Washington State 2: Mark Appel struck out 10 batters and No. 11 Stanford (24-21, 9-12) edged Washington State in a Pac-12 Conference series game in Stanford, Calif.
Tanner Chleboard (4-2) went the distance for the Cougars. WSU had two runners on in the ninth, but couldn’t get them across.
Arizona State 4, Gonzaga 2: The Bulldogs’ bats quieted down after the first inning and the Sun Devils cruised to the nonconference win at Patterson Baseball Complex in Spokane.
Royce Bolinger was 3 for 3 and drove in one of two runs for Gonzaga.
The Bulldogs (29-18) and Sun Devils (30-17) will play the middle game of the three-game series tonight at 6.
UCLA 2, Washington 0: Bruins pitchers stymied the Huskies’ bats in a Pac-12 Conference win at Safeco Field in Seattle.
UCLA (33-13, 13-9) and Washington (26-19, 11-11) resume the series at Husky Ballpark today.
Women’s golf
Whitworth junior Emily Guthrie shot a 78 in the final round of the NCAA Division III championships at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind. She finished the four-round tournament at 25-over 313 and took 20th place in a field of 101 players.
Guthrie was also named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-West Region team and was named an honorable mention All-American.
• Idaho senior Kayla Mortellaro shot a 3-over 75 in the second round of the NCAA West Regional at the Colorado National Golf Course in Erie, Colo.
She is nine strokes off the lead heading into today’s third round.
• St. George’s High School graduate Chessey Thomas, now a member of the Tennessee Volunteers, shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 15th after the second round of the NCAA Central Regional at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
• Washington shot a 15-over 303 in the second round of the NCAA East Region tournament at Penn State Golf Course in State College, Penn., and is eighth out of 24 teams.
Sadena Parks shot a 71 and is tied for 31st overall heading into today’s final round. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA championship.
Women’s tennis
No. 31 Washington State beat No. 36 Florida State 4-3 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla. for the second time in school history.
The last time WSU made it past the first round was in 2001.
With the match tied at 3, it came down to the No. 6 singles matchup between the Cougars’ Charlotte Koning and the Seminoles’ Amy Sargeant. Koning won 7-5, 6-4.
WSU will play No. 2 Florida today.
Softball
Allee Carter hit a home run and finished with four RBIs as Snow (34-19) blanked North Idaho (23-36) 9-0 in five innings at the Region 18 tournament in Taylorsville, Utah.
The loss ended the Cardinals’ season.
