In brief: Health warning: Don’t eat South Korean shellfish

OLYMPIA – The Washington state Health Department is warning consumers to avoid eating fresh or frozen shellfish from South Korea.

That warning came Thursday as state officials said the federal Food and Drug Administration reported that such shellfish and many shellfish products shipped from South Korea to the United States may be contaminated.

Canned shellfish are not affected.

State health officials say there have been no reported illnesses in Washington associated with the products. The department is working with distributors and local health agencies on a preventive recall.

About 70,000 pounds of copper cable stolen

SEATTLE – Sound Transit officials said someone has stolen about 70,000 pounds of valuable copper cable from a tunnel inside the elevated light rail track between SeaTac airport and Seattle.

Ron Griffin heads the Sound Transit police. He puts a street value of about $250,000 on the 22,000 feet of cable and said it was likely cut up and carried out chunk by chunk.

The transit agency’s Bruce Gray said Friday the missing cable poses no danger to trains or passengers. He said it protects the structure from any stray currents.
