Mead claims final 4A state baseball berth
Jordan McGown lined a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in the winning run and complete a thrilling comeback on Saturday afternoon as Mead defeated Ferris 5-4 in a 4A Region I elimination baseball game at Mead.
The win gave the Panthers (19-5) the region’s final berth to the state tournament. Ferris ends its season 16-8.
Down 4-2 entering the seventh, Mead quickly loaded the bases. A walk forced in the first run of the inning.
Ferris’ Alex Jondal relieved Tim Yoshihara and forced a ground-ball double play that brought home the tying run. McGown then won it for Mead.
The 4A state tournament will be played May 25-26 at GESA Stadium in Pasco.
Richland 5, Gonzaga Prep 1: The Bombers scored four runs in the first and held on for a win over the Bullpups (19-6) in the regional title game at Richland.
The Bombers earned the top seed to the state tournament with Gonzaga Prep getting the second seed.
Idaho 3A District I
Ashton Stevenson’s RBI-single in the top of the seventh gave St. Maries a 4-3 win over Timberlake in the title game at Spirit Lake.
The win gave the Lumberjacks a berth to the state tournament. They will play South Fremont at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Ontario, Ore.
Following the loss, Timberlake played Bonners Ferry and beat the Badgers 11-1 to claim the remaining seed to state.
2A Subregional
Selah scored four runs in the top of the eighth and beat Cheney 5-1 in the title game at Cheney.
Jeremy Alderman, who pitched into the eighth before giving way to Austin Harding, had two hits for the Blackhawks (16-8).
The win gave the Vikings the top seed to the state tournament, which will be held May 25-26 at County Stadium in Yakima.
The Blackhawks will be the second seed.
Ellensburg 8, East Valley 2: Corbin Richardson hit a three-run double in the first and the Bulldogs beat the host Knights (14-7) to earn a state berth and end East Valley’s season.
Cameron Campbell added a two-run double in the sixth for Ellensburg.
East Valley (Yakima) 3, Clarkston 2: The Red Devils broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth and beat the visiting Bantams (16-7) to earn a state berth and end Clarkston’s season.
1A Bi-District
Cashmere scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and beat Lakeside 4-2 in an elimination game in Wenatchee.
Softball
Jammie Madonna had two hits and drove in two runs as Colville claimed the top seed to the Bi-District tournament with a 3-1 win over Lakeside in the District 7 1A title game at Colville.
Jolene Rogers went the distance on the mound for the Indians (19-2), giving up seven hits and one run.
Lakeside (15-5), which beat Riverside 12-2 earlier in the day, is the second seed heading into Bi-Districts.
Colville advanced to the title game earlier with a 14-3 win over Newport.
Bi-County 1B North
Selkirk scored two runs in the fifth and held on to beat Curlew 2-1 in Kettle Falls to claim the top seed to the district tournament.
Kirby Anderson went the distance for the Rangers (20-0), allowing a run on six hits while striking out eight. Curlew, which beat Cusick 19-9 earlier in the day, earned the second seed.
In an earlier game, Courtney Holter struck out nine and allowed just three hits as Selkirk blanked Northport 13-0.
Bi-County 1B South
Madeline Isaak struck out 10 and had three hits at the plate to lead Almira/Coulee-Hartline to a 13-3 win over St. Michael’s in the title game at Hartline.
Jordan Jones added three hits and three RBIs for the Warriors, who claimed the top seed to districts. St. Michael’s, which beat Wilbur-Creston 10-8 in an earlier game, is the second seed.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline advanced to the championship game by beating Columbia 40-1.
Soccer
Sophomore forward Jake Gularte scored 22 minutes into the game and Mt. Spokane held on to beat Sunnyside 1-0 in a 3A Regional tournament elimination game at Joe Albi Stadium.
The win sends the Wildcats (11-5) into the state tournament. They’ll play Tuesday against Kennewick.
2A Regional
Pullman 2, Grandview 1: Moritz Lange’s shootout-goal lifted the Greyhounds (12-5) past visiting Grandview and into the state tournament.
After Grandview benefited from an own goal, Malte Lange scored in the 38th minute to knot the game at 1.
Othello 4, West Valley 1: The Eagles’ 1-0 lead quickly disappeared as the host Huskies surged late and ended West Valley’s season.
Randall Harris scored off an assist from Brandon Ray in the 38th to give the Eagles (10-9) a 1-0 lead. Othello took control with four late goals – two by Miguel Penaloza.
West Valley finished the season with a trip to the regional tournament for the first time in six years.
Track and field
The Timberlake boys and girls claimed titles at the Idaho 3A District I meet at Spirit Lake.
Brian Cronnelly, Ben Austin and Preston Rhodes won events for the Tigers boys.
Cronnelly was first in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.61 seconds. Austin won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.74 and Rhodes claimed the title in the pole vault, reaching a height of 13 feet, 1 inch.
The Timberlake girls were led by Rachel Ward, who won individual titles in the 100 hurdles (15.88) and 300 hurdles (46.79).
The top three individuals and winning relay teams earned spots in the state meet, which will be held May 18-19 at Eagle High School in Meridian.
• Quinn Robinson and Cody Unfred won events and Freeman edged Lakeside for the title at the District 7 1A meet in Riverside.
Robinson won the 400 (49.35) and Unfred was the triple jump champion (42-11).
Ryan Coffman won two events for Lakeside. He won the 1,600 (4:34.89) and the 3,200 (10:19.18).
Newport had two double winners. Jake Wiley won the 100 (11.22) and 200 (22.40) and Aaron Castle claimed titles in the shot put (65-3 1/2) and discus (157-8).
Freeman finished with 140 points, followed by Lakeside (131), Colville (120), Newport (103), Riverside (97) and Chewelah (55).
Lakeside won the girls title.
The Eagles got wins from Anandae Clark (pole vault; 12-6) and Katie Collins (300 hurdles; 49.29).
Colville finished second with 159 points, followed by Riverside (140), Freeman (79), Newport (77) and Chewelah (34).
The Rams’ Jess Mildes won titles in the 800 (2:23.43), 1,600 (5:23.04) and the 3,200 (11:21.10).
Boys tennis
Freeman’s Travis Campbell regrouped after a second-set loss and beat Riverside’s George Brambilla 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 in the District 7 1B tournament singles final at Mead.
Chewelah’s Jeff Petersen beat Lakeside’s Stephen Ryan 6-1, 6-3 in the third/fourth-place match.
The top four singles and doubles seeds earned berths to the regional tournament, which begins Friday at West Valley High School.
Girls tennis
Colville’s Tessa Moore claimed the top seed to regionals with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Chewelah’s Naomi Miler in the District 7 1B tournament singles final at Mead.
Lakeside’s Katie Schmidlekofer earned third place with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Freeman’s Andie Olson.
The top four singles and doubles seeds claimed spots in the regional tournament, which begins Friday at West Valley High School.
