Errors do in Cougs at Cal

Taylor Ard had a pair of doubles and four RBIs for Washington State, but they went for naught when defense let down the Cougars (24-24) in a 13-8 nonconference baseball loss at California on Monday.

The Bears (26-22) capitalized on four WSU errors in a four-run seventh inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit and tacked on five more runs in the eighth.

College golf

Led by Freeman graduates Connor Claeys (tied for second at 8-over 150) and Dylan Maine (tied for sixth at 151) the Community Colleges of Spokane men won a fourth straight tournament, 617-618 over Fraser Valley, in Coos Bay, Ore. The CCS women were third at 525, with Kelsey Berg (150) sixth.

Idaho State 3A: Two-time defending girls champion Kaceelyn Pouttu of Kellogg has a nine-stroke lead with a 72 after the first of two rounds at Preston. Her Wildcats are second, trailing Weiser 372-379.

Kellogg’s boys are the team leader, 313-318 over Marsh Valley. Kellogg’s Dain Harden is tied for fifth, four shots back, at 75.

Idaho State 4A: Derek Bayley of Lakeland shot a 4-under 68 for a one-shot lead in the boys competition at Blackfoot.

On the girls side, Moscow’s Taylor Anderson and Kati Greear shot 79 and 81 for first and third, respectively. The Bears are third at 370. Chelsea Bayley of Lakeland shares sixth at 84.

Idaho State 5A: Maddie Dodge of Post Falls shot 78, five shots out of first, in the girls event at Idaho Falls, while Coeur d’Alene’s Hunter Kraft is fourth in the boys at 71. The Vikings boys are second with a 291.

Washington District 7 2B: Colfax had the top four boys at MeadowWood, led by freshman Hunter Weitze and senior Kyle Johnson, co-medalists at 159, to lead the 16 boys from the district who qualified for state.

Kira Powell of Odessa-Harrington, who wasn’t available to play at Liberty Lake, used a special exemption to lead eight girls state qualifiers.

District 7 1B baseball

Odessa-Harrington defeated Northport 8-2 at University for the No. 1 seed to state, which begins Saturday at Central Valley.

Northport goes as the No. 2 seed, and Almira/Coulee-Hartline is the third seed off an 11-4 win that ousted Selkirk.
