NW Christian takes top 2B district seed

Northwest Christian, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague and Reardan earned state baseball berths after District 7 2B play Tuesday at Medical Lake.

NWC’s Crusaders beat the LRS Broncos 2-0 to earn the No. 1 seed to state. David Yoppini went the distance, striking out 10, and also hit a two-run double that accounted for both runs in the game.

NWC will play Asotin at Shadle Park at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the state tournament.

LRS later beat Reardan 15-4 to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to state. Aaron Hayes went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs for the Broncos. Tyler Fredrick allowed three hits over five innings and went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Reardan beat Kettle Falls 11-0 earlier in the day in a loser-out game. Deven Wesebaum went the distance for the Indians, limiting Kettle Falls to three hits, and Andy Hansen had three doubles and drove in five runs for Reardan.

LRS plays Warden at 10 a.m. Saturday in Walla Walla, while Reardan plays Riverside Christian at Shadle Park at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Softball

District 7 2B

Davenport 13, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 3: Amanda Brantley went the distance and Davenport broke open a tie game with a 10-run sixth inning in a victory over host Lind-Ritzville/Sprague.

The Gorillas play Kettle Falls at 11 a.m. Saturday at Merkel Complex. LRS’ season is over.

Liberty 15, Springdale 5 (5): Liberty rode a seven-run first inning to a victory in five innings over visiting Springdale.

Liberty faces Reardan at 11 a.m. Saturday at Merkel. Springdale, which beat Republic 11-0 earlier Tuesday to advance to meet Liberty, is done for the season.

District 9 2B softball

Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia beat Asotin 4-3 and Dayton topped Liberty Christian 9-2. TOR and Dayton will play at 4 p.m. Friday in Pasco, with the winner the No. 3 seed to regionals and the loser out.

Golf

Nine area boys and eight area girls are headed to state after the 2A regional at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.

Four Clarkston boys lead the area contingent. Michael Baldec finished third, shooting a 72, with teammates Tyler Carlson and Joe Baldec tied for fifth at 77. AJ Barndt tied for 18th with an 85.

PJ Berish of West Valley (80, tied for seventh); Tyler Mauer of Cheney, Donovan Snyder of Deer Park and Riley Devine of Pullman (84, tied for 10th); and Ryan Brown of East Valley are also headed to state.

Three Pullman girls are headed to state – Becky Birchett (106, 16th), Olivia Kromm (108, tied for 18th) and Nicole Welter (112, 22nd).

Deer Park and East Valley both qualified a pair for state. The Stags’ Selena Lewis (98, third) and Allison Rummer (104, tied for 10th) and the Knights’ Erin Wallman (107, 17th) and Stephanie Olson (109, tied for 18th) qualified.

Cheney’s Allie Brown (102, tied for seventh) is also headed to state.

The top 22 finishers for the boys and the girls qualified for the state tournaments, which will be held Tuesday and next Wednesday in Spanaway, Wash.
