Scheibe pitches Whitworth to regional win

Dan Scheibe delivered quite a performance in Whitworth’s first trip to the NCAA Division III baseball tournament, limiting La Verne (Calif.) to six hits in a complete-game shutout as the Pirates prevailed 5-0 on Wednesday in McMinnville, Ore. Scheibe (6-2), a freshman right-hander from Richland, struck out nine and walked only one for Whitworth, the third seed in the McMinnville Regional. The Pirates advance to face second-seeded Trinity tonight at 7. Gerhard Muelheims (St. George’s) went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Whitworth, and Tyler Pfeffer (Shadle Park) and Nick Motsinger (University) each drove in a run.
