In brief: Third solar eclipse viewing site
The Spokane Astronomical Society has added a third public viewing location for a partial solar eclipse starting about 5 p.m. on Sunday.
They will have telescopes with filters and other equipment at Franklin Park at Queen Avenue and Division Street in addition to the Southside Sports Complex at 46th Avenue and Regal Street and Sky Prairie Park near Strong and Five Mile roads.
The partial solar eclipse reaches its maximum of about 72 percent coverage in Spokane at 6:19 p.m. and ends about 7:24 p.m.
Viewers are advised not to look directly at the sun without proper equipment because the sun can cause permanent eye damage. A piece of paper or cardboard with a pin hole or one side of binoculars can be used to project a safe image onto a white surface.
Police say driver brandished gun
A man threatened three people with a gun during a road rage incident on Wednesday, police said Thursday.
Jarred Woods, 30, was contacted by a Spokane County sheriff’s deputy after his alleged victims provided 911 dispatch with his license plate number.
The victims, a man and two juvenile females, said they were driving south on Argonne Road near Wellesley Avenue when they passed Woods’ vehicle and he swerved to the left, nearly causing them to swerve into oncoming traffic, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Woods then displayed a handgun and yelled at the victims as they called 911, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Woods has a concealed weapons permit.
A deputy called his phone after running his license plate number and located him in the area of Argonne and Trent Avenue. He first said he only kept the gun in his trunk but then admitted to pointing it at the occupants of another vehicle because he feared the driver, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A .40 caliber Baretta handgun was seized from the trunk of Woods’ vehicle. He was arrested on three counts of intimidation with a firearm.
Sullivan offramp closing briefly
Traffic restrictions and closures on Interstate 90 at Sullivan Road will start this evening and extend into Saturday for completion of last year’s widening project from Sullivan to Barker Road.
New pavement is needed for the westbound offramp at Sullivan Road, forcing closure of the ramp starting at 8 p.m. and lasting until as late as 5 p.m. Saturday.
To make room for workers, westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane from 8 p.m. until as late as 6 a.m. on Saturday. Then, traffic will be reduced to two lanes until as late as 5 p.m. Saturday.
