Whitworth powers into regional baseball final
Spencer Ansett threw eight scoreless innings to lead Whitworth to a 12-0 win over Trinity (Texas), and into today’s championship game of the Division III baseball regional in McMinnville, Ore.
The Pirates will play at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of today’s noon game between Trinity and Coe (Iowa).
In the Pirates’ first game on Friday, Whitworth (29-14-1) rallied with five runs in the seventh inning for a 5-1 victory to eliminate top-seeded Concordia (Texas).
Nick Scourey made his first start for Whitworth in almost two months and went the distance, scattering a pair of hits and striking out three.
Additionally, Pirates coach Dan Ramsay was named the West Region Coach of the Year by D3baseball.com and Tyler Pfeffer earned the region’s Player of the Year award. Pitcher Dan Scheibe was named to the All-West Region third team.
Oregon State 10, Washington State 2: The Beavers (34-17, 14-11 Pac-12) scored four runs in the first inning with back-to-back homers en route to their win over the host Cougars (25-25, 10-15) in Pac-12 Conference play.
Arizona State 7, Washington 5: The Sun Devils (33-18, 15-10 Pac-12) took their final lead in the sixth inning in a win over the Huskies (27-22, 11-14) at Tempe, Ariz.
Gonzaga 12, Portland 4: Tyler Olson scattered six hits as the host Bulldogs (30-20, 10-9 WCC) defeated the Pilots (25-21, 12-10) in the first game of a three-game series at Patterson Complex.
Softball
Upsets were aplenty at the opening day of the NWAACC championships in Portland as only one of the top eight seeded teams won its two games in the double-elimination tournament.
That was top-seeded Wenatchee Valley (40-5), which defeated ninth-seeded CC Spokane 9-4.
CC Spokane (25-18), which will face Treasure Valley (27-19) today in consolation bracket play, defeated Olympic 9-7 in an earlier game.
Washington 2, Harvard 0: Kimberlee Souza hit a two-RBI single in the fourth as the Huskies won their NCAA regional opener in Seattle.
Men’s golf
Washington moved into sole possession of first place after the second round of the NCAA Regionals in Norman, Okla. The third-seeded Huskies are 9-under with a four-shot lead over Florida State heading into today’s final round.
Charlie Hughes and Moscow, Idaho, product Chris Williams shot 68 for the Huskies. Williams is tied for fifth.
• In the West Regional at Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., Idaho’s Jarred Bossio scored an eagle on the par-5, 500-yard 17th hole to finish 1-over following the second round.
Bossio is tied for 30th.
Hockey
Spokane Chiefs coach Don Nachbaur was named as an assistant coach for Canada’s national junior team for the 2013 IIHF U20 World Championship in Ufa, Russia, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.
