In brief: Pirates win regional tourney

Baseball: Whitworth scored five runs in the seventh inning and beat Trinity 9-2 in the NCAA Division III Regional championship game in McMinnville, Ore.

The win sent the Pirates into the NCAA Division III national tournament for the first time in school history.

Nick Motsinger and Tyler Pfeffer each hit two-run doubles in the seventh for Whitworth.

The Pirates’ Kevin Valerio, who had two hits and drove in a run, was named tournament MVP. He finished the tournament with seven RBIs.

Valerio, Dan Scheibe, Landon Scott, Joshua Davis and Erik Nikssarian were named to the all-regional team.

Whitworth will take on the winner of the Marietta Regional on Friday in Appleton, Wis.

The tournament runs May 25-29.

Williams wins NCAA regional

Golf: University of Washington’s Chris Williams – a former Moscow, Idaho resident – eagled the 18th hole and won the NCAA Southwest Regional in Norman, Okla.

Williams finished the tournament with rounds of 73, 68 and 68 and won by five strokes.

The third-seeded Huskies were 4-under for the tournament and won by four strokes. Texas finished second at even par.

Next up for Washington is the NCAA Championships May 29 through June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Watanabe sets Everest record

Climbing: Japan’s Tamae Watanabe, 73, became the oldest woman to summit Mount Everest, breaking a record formerly held by Spokane’s Kay LeClaire.

Watanabe held the record since climbing the mountain at age 63, but was overtaken by LeClaire in 2009.

Watanabe reached the summit Saturday morning after an all-night climb.
