Area roundup: Zags sweep Pilots
Gonzaga took advantage of two Portland errors to score five unearned runs and held off a Pilots rally in the ninth inning to win 7-6 on Sunday in Spokane and complete a sweep of the three-game West Coast Conference series.
Senior Royce Bolinger hit his 11th home run of the season in his final career home game, a three-run shot, and finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs for the Bulldogs (32-20, 12-9 WCC).
Andy Hunter (4-2) allowed six runs on eight hits over 8 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one. He also had two hits and an RBI.
Portland scored three runs in the ninth inning before David Bigelow recorded the final two outs to earn his fourth save of the season.
Gonzaga plays Washington State in Pullman on Tuesday, then finishes the regular season with a three-game series against BYU in Provo, Utah, beginning Thursday.
• Arizona State broke a tie in the seventh inning and added two insurance runs in the eighth for a 9-6 Pac-12 victory over Washington in Tempe, Ariz.
Freshmen Branden Berry and Robert Pehl both went 2 for 4 for the Huskies (27-24, 11-16 Pac-12), with Berry delivering a double and a triple while driving in two runs and Pehl recording an RBI.
Washington concludes the regular season with a game against Seattle University on Tuesday and a three-game weekend series with Washington State at Husky Ballpark.
Softball
Washington recorded its third shutout of the weekend, 4-0 over Harvard in the NCAA Seattle Regional championship, to advance to next week’s Super Regionals.
Bryana Walker earned her 10th win of the season for the Huskies (39-17), allowing four hits and striking out seven in the complete game.
Kaitlin Inglesby drove in a run in the first inning and Nikia Williams hit a three-run home run in the fourth.
Washington will face California (54-5) in Berkeley, Calif., in the Super Regionals.
Track and field
Seven Whitworth athletes are headed to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday and Friday in Claremont, Calif.
Carter Comito is the defending NCAA champion in the discus and heads into the championships with the best mark in the nation (194 feet, 5 inches). He is also seeded eighth in the shot put.
Jheri Gates, an indoor All-American in 2011, is seeded fourth in the high jump.
Frank Lima finished eighth in the outdoor high jump last year, John McCormack is seeded fifth in the javelin throw, Joseph Ingman is seeded 17th in the javelin, Samuel Wright is 18th in discus and Chibron Tomeo is 15th in the pole vault.
