Odessa-Harrington’s Powell repeats as golf champion

Kira Powell of Odessa-Harrington won her third straight state championship and St. John-Endicott won the girls team title at the State 2B/1B golf tournament, which concluded Wednesday at Oakbrook Golf and Country Club in Lakewood.

Powell shot 85s in both rounds to finish at 170, one stroke ahead of DeSales’ Emily Baumgart.

SJE had three girls finish in the top 20 – Michal Schuster (174, third place), Devan Bafus (214, 12th) and Sierra McCanna (224, 18th).

Other local girls finishing in the top 20 were Kim Conway of Wilbur-Creston (194, fourth), Sadie Garner of Northwest Christian (211, 11th), Paige Mackleit of Colfax (220, tied for 14th) and Kristine Lamping of Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (226, t-20th).

For the boys, Colfax finished second in the team competition with 94.5 points, 14.5 behind champion DeSales. The Bulldogs were led by Tyler Stevenson, who finished fifth with a 168.

Hunter Weitze tied for 16th place at 176, Kyle Johnson finished 23rd at 180 and Kasey Johnson finished 25th at 182.

Davenport’s Wade Moses (174, t-13th), St. John-Endicott’s Cole McCanna (186, t-27th) and Kettle Falls’ Alex Pratt (195, 39th) also competed Wednesday.

Ryan Baumgart of DeSales was medalist at 151.

Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls’) boys finished second in the team competition at The Home Course in DuPont.

The Eagles were led by Ryan Newcomb, who finished tied for seventh place at 158. Adam Campasino tied for 19th at 163 and Wyatt Neagle tied for 29th at 167 for Lakeside, which finished with 66 points. Ilwaco won the championship with 121.5 points.

Freeman’s Sheldon Maul (161, t-14th), Chewelah’s Dylan Long (162, t-16th) and Newport’s Gage Anderson (171, t-36th) also competed Wednesday.

Ilwaco’s Ross Kukula was medalist, shooting 149.

For the girls, Freeman’s Alyssa Maine finished fifth at 174 and Colville’s Megan Ray finished 13th at 192. Goldendale’s Bree Wandersheid was medalist at 146.

Tyler Carlson of Clarkston won the state championship and the Bantams finished second in the team competition at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway.

Carlson followed his 76 on Tuesday with a 71 Wednesday, good for a 147 and a seven-stroke win over Blaine’s Ryan Wallen.

Michael Baldec tied for ninth at 160 and Joe Baldec tied for 27th at 173 as Clarkston finished with 94 points, one behind team titlist Interlake.

For the girls, East Valley’s Erin Wallman shot 204 and tied for 38th place. Steilacoom’s Cherokee Kim was medalist at 153.
