A waste of time

It’s that time of year again: Club soccer tryouts have begun.

Everywhere you look you see massive herds of boys and girls wasting their time on a useless cause for the futile effort of making the “A” team.

Soccer tryouts are just a big waste of time for the players who aren’t preselected. As most soccer players know, the coaches of club teams have been scouting for their future all-star teams all season. By the time tryouts actually happen, teams are already preset. So if you are new to the club or you’re a returning member but not under the coach’s radar and you try out, you will have a slim or next-to-zero chance of making the “A” team.

So if teams are pretty much already selected, what’s the point of tryouts? If players are already chosen for a team, why do the coaches have to make everybody else believe they actually have a chance of reaching their goal?

All tryouts are saying to players who are not preselected is, “Come play your hardest, put your heart on the field for a consolation spot on the “C” team.”
