Gonzaga whips BYU 17-1 in regular-season finale

Marco Gonzales’ three-run double sparked a 10-run third inning and the Gonzaga baseball team whipped Brigham Young 17-1 on Saturday in a regular-season finale in Provo, Utah.

The Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 34-22, 14-10 in the West Coast Conference. BYU finished at 22-27, 10-14.

Steven Halcomb had five hits and Billy Moon had two, one a two-run home run.

Andy Hunter pitched into the ninth for his fifth win of the season.

Gonzaga will find out if it makes the NCAA field during Monday morning’s selection show.

Washington 5, Washington State 2: Four Huskies’ pitchers combined to toss a six-hitter and Washington (30-24, 13-16) beat the Cougars (27-28, 11-18) in Pac-12 Conference play at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Collin Slaybaugh had three hits and drove in two runs for Washington State.

The Huskies and Cougars will play today in both teams’ regular-season finale.

Lewis-Clark State 5, College of Idaho 1: Braxton Miller hit a three-run home run and the Warriors (42-13) beat the Coyotes (41-21) at the NAIA World Series in Lewiston.

Anthony Armanino improved to 10-1 after pitching the complete game.

The Warriors will play Monday at noon against either LSU Shreveport or Rogers State.

Track and field

The Washington State women’s 400-meter relay team earned a spot in next month’s NCAA Championships with a 12th-place finish at the West Preliminary meet in Austin, Texas.

The team of Chanel James, Cindy Robinson, Candii McFarland and Shawna Fermin finished in 44.916 seconds and claimed the final berth to the national championship meet, which will be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Idaho’s Mike Marshall (javelin) is the only Vandal to advance to the national meet. Eastern Washington’s Shene Davis (36th, triple jump) and Kyle King (34th, 5,000 meters) did not qualify in their events.

• Whitworth’s Carter Comito and John McCormack earned All-America honors and the Pirates men took 15th place at the NCAA Division III Championships in Claremont, Calif.

McCormack finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 216 feet, 4 inches – a season best. Comito earned his second All-America honor with a seventh-place finish in the shot put (55-8 1/2). He won the discus on Thursday.

Softball

Jolene Henderson was masterful on the mound as California (55-5) beat Washinton 5-0 in the opener of a three-game NCAA Super Regional series in Berkeley, Calif.

The second game is today at 4 p.m. If UW (39-18) win, the teams will play again today to determine a series winner.
