Pullman’s Mahama wins State 2A boys discus

TACOMA – Things didn’t start well for Pullman senior Adam Mahama in the 2A discus Saturday in the final day of Star Track XXX at Mt. Tahoma High School.

“When I started throwing, I had a couple worm-burners,” Mahama said.

Mahama righted himself quickly, though, throwing the platter 172 feet, 3 inches to capture a state championship under sun-kissed skies.

“I wasn’t feeling very well at first,” said Mahama, who took second in the shot put on Friday. “The last couple of weeks I hadn’t hit 170.”

Mahama found his form just in time.

“I’m very pleased with the weekend,” Mahama said. “I’m very happy with the season. Last year I was very inconsistent. This year I buckled down and focused on form. I’m happy with how it ended.”

Cheney junior Sanne Holland was hoping for a distance double, but she found herself boxed in nearing the end of the third lap and was sixth in the 1,600.

Holland didn’t have much left on the final lap, pulling into fifth before the finish line (5 minutes, 6.54 seconds), about 2 seconds behind her season best.

East Valley junior Darbi Dobson took second in the discus (123-10) after taking second in the shot put.

“I’m not happy,” Dobson said. “I felt I could win a state title in the shot and discus. I thought I could do better. Next year I want to double.

A pair of EV teammates finished third and fourth in the discus. Elisha Allred (122-10), a sophomore, was third and Hayley Garrahan (118-2), a senior, was fourth.

Cheney junior Janessa Day took third in the 400 (58.21).

Deer Park junior Dan Amman, who gave up baseball for track, took third in the 1,600 in a season-best 4:12.17.

Pullman junior Anna Guo placed third in the long jump (16-11½).

Cheney junior Kendall Dunn took third in the 300 hurdles (45.15) and Clarkston senior Jamie Weisner was fifth (45.83).

The North Kitsap girls took first with 69 points, edging Sehome (67). The Ephrata boys took home the title with 66 and White River was next with 44.

Other area athletes earning medals: the Cheney girls 800 relay took third (1:44.59); the Deer Park girls 400 relay was fourth (50.02); DP senior Nikole Ball took seventh in the girls 100 (12.90); EV sophomore Willie Stoutzenberger was sixth in the boys pole vault (14-0); DP junior Jade Wilson placed seventh in the 300 boys hurdles (41.38); Cheney freshman Kelsey Schwendiman and Cheney senior Kali Klotz-Brooks placed sixth (2:20.06) and seventh (2:20.76), respectively, in the girls 800; and the Cheney girls 1,600 relay took sixth (4:04.13).
