NBA: Carmelo Anthony had 30 points and 10 rebounds, and the Knicks gave suffering New Yorkers something to cheer with a 104-84 victory over the Miami Heat in their storm-delayed season opener Friday night.

In the first sporting event in New York since Superstorm Sandy, the Knicks dominated a game the Heat players weren’t sure should even be played with the city still so devastated. But the Knicks hoped they could provide a distraction for a few hours, and fans who were able to watch surely loved what they saw from a team that could barely compete with Miami last season.

Steve Novak added 17 points off the bench and Raymond Felton had 14 points and nine assists to begin his second stint with the Knicks. LeBron James scored 23 points for the Heat.

Clips beat free-falling Lakers: Chris Paul’s 18 points and 15 assists outshined 40 points by Kobe Bryant as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Los Angeles Lakers 105-95 to send their Staples Center co-tenants to an 0-3 start.

Players have until Friday to accept the one-year contracts.

Miscellany: Under growing pressure with thousands still shivering from Sandy, Sunday’s New York City Marathon was canceled by Mayor Michael Bloomberg after mounting criticism that this was not a good time for a race.

With the death toll in the city at 39 and power not yet fully restored, many New Yorkers had recoiled at the prospect of police officers being assigned to protect a marathon, storm victims being evicted from hotels to make way for runners, and big generators humming along at the finish-line tents in Central Park.
