GSL football teams open locally

The three Greater Spokane League football teams that won play-in games will host first-round games Saturday when the official state playoffs begin.

In 4A, Gonzaga Prep (9-1) will take on Union of Vancouver (7-3) at 1 p.m. At the same time, Mead (9-1) faces Newport of Bellevue (7-3) at Joe Albi Stadium.

In 3A, University (6-4) welcomes O’Dea (8-2) in a mid-afternoon kickoff at 3.

• The tiebreaking flap in the Great Northern League was settled Monday and Pullman and Cheney head to the state playoffs.

Pullman (6-3) stays at home Friday and takes on perennial 2A power Prosser (9-1). Kickoff is at 7.

Cheney draws perhaps an even tougher task, traveling to No. 1-ranked Othello (10-0) for a Saturday afternoon game at 1.

The WIAA District 7 board met to listen to East Valley’s appeal of the GNL’s tiebreaking formula. EV contended that the formula adopted a year ago by the league wasn’t posted on the league website. After nearly a 2-hour meeting, the District 7 board voted unanimously, 10-0, to deny EV’s appeal, district director Russ Brown said.

Brown said the tiebreaking policy adopted last year was approved by all the GNL schools.

“There didn’t seem to be any need for any remedy,” Brown said.
