He was born July 18, 1924, to Roscoe and Marie Ghering of Spokane.
He leaves behind his daughter, Candace Marie Manning of Spokane; and his son, Stephen Clendenin Ghering of Deer Park, Washington.
He was the loving grandfather of Catherine G. Birky and Nathan B. Ghering, both of Deer Park.
He has one great-granddaughter, Madelyn Noel Birky, age three.
Henry graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, Spokane, in 1942 and Gonzaga University, after World War II, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
In 1943 he was called up to serve in the Army in World War II.
He was involved in the invasion of Italy, France and Germany, returning home in 1945 with two Bronze Stars for bravery and a Purple Heart for being wounded in battle.
While enrolled at Gonzaga University, he married his high school sweetheart, Candace Lucille Smith, who became the mother of their two children.
She died of polio in 1952 at the age of 28.
Henry remarried in 1958 to Eileen Plumb of Montana.
She and Henry had been married for 50 years upon her death in 2008.
Henry spent 10 years working for the J.C. Penney Company in Spokane, Minot, North Dakota and Denver, Colorado.
After leaving J.C. Penney, he and Eileen opened three boutique clothing stores in the Denver area.
In 1968 he went to work for the Fullenwider Real Estate group and then Caldwell Banker in Denver, until his retirement in 1996.
Henry was very involved in the Littleton, Colorado Rotary Club from 1963 until 2007, serving as President from 1971-1972 and Secretary from 1973 until 2007.
After Eileen’s passing in 2008, he moved to Spokane to live nearer his family.
He loved living at Fairwinds Retirement Community until his health dictated his move to Royal Park Care Center.
He was a favorite partner of the ladies at the Fairwinds dances, even though he was in his mid 80s!
He was a gracious gentleman who loved his family and will be greatly missed by his family and his friends in the Spokane and Denver areas.
“Be not grieved long for those who depart into the loving arms of our Savior for we will all be reunited at the end of our days.”
