Religion Notebook: Churches present variety of bazaars

Churches are hosting holiday bazaars this weekend:

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan Ave., will present its annual fall bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Items for sale include baked goods, quilts, bean soup mix and cutlery.

There will also be a raffle for a handmade quilt.

Light lunches will be available.

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline St., will have its annual fall bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The sale will include handcrafted items, baked goods, a quilt raffle, silent auction, dessert and coffee bar.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s mission outreach projects.

Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will hold its Holiday Arts and Craft Festival Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The festival will feature handmade items and a coffee bar.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 1104 W. Heroy Ave., will present its Women’s Club Bazaar on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day will include a country store, baked goods, a raffle for gift baskets, a boutique and more.

Lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Central Lutheran Church, 512 S. Bernard St., will host its annual Scandinavian Bazaar on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sale includes Scandinavian specialties such as lefse, meatballs and cookies.

The day will include a Kaffe Stue, or coffee hour, from 9 to 11 a.m. Women in traditional Scandinavian dress will serve homemade desserts.

The cost for five treats and coffee is $4.

Proceeds of this annual sale will benefit local charities including the Central Christian Action, Central Clothes Closet, Good Samaritan Fund, Lutheran Community Services, Mid-City Concerns, Second Harvest Food Bank, Volunteers of America Crosswalk and Volunteers of America Hope House.

Volunteer opportunities

Catholic Charities of Spokane, 12 E. Fifth Ave., will present a volunteer information session Tuesday from 10 to 11:15 a.m.

The session will offer information about programs and will include tours of the facility.

Trinity school auction

Trinity Catholic School will present its annual auction, “Trinity’s Tailgate Party,” Saturday at Gonzaga Prep, 1224 E. Euclid Ave.

The doors open at 4:30 p.m. for a silent auction, a catered dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a live auction at 7 p.m.

Items on the block include a pie of the month club, a 2001 Chevy van, sports packages, restaurant gift certificates and more.

Complimentary champagne and snacks will be served at the beginning of the event.

Tickets are $30.

Fall dinner

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada St., will present a fall dinner Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The meal will include beef stew, cheesy biscuits, apple crisp and hot and cold drinks.

The cost is $5 a plate and children younger than 4 can eat for free.

Penny auction

Moran United Methodist Church will present its annual penny auction Saturday at the Southside Senior Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave., Saturday at 11 a.m.

Penny auction tickets are available for $2 for 200 tickets, $5 for 500 tickets and $10 for 1,000 tickets. Tickets can be used to bid on gift baskets and items donated by local businesses.

A silent auction will include handcrafted items, tool sets, original art and more.

Lunch will be available for $5.

Winning numbers will be drawn at 1 p.m. You must be present to win.

Proceeds will benefit mission outreach.

Cello recital

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present cellist Douglas Starkebaum, a senior at Gonzaga University Sunday at 4 p.m.

Starkebaum is a member of the Gonzaga University Symphony and the school’s chamber quartet.

He will perform Boccherini’s Cello Sonata in A, the Bach Cello Suite No. 5, Gabriel Faure’s Elegy and the Allegro from the Dvorak Cello Concerto.

Accompanying Starkebaum will be pianist Greg Presley who has studied music at Yale University and received his master’s in music from Julliard School.

The cost of admission is a $5 donation at the door.
