Hospitalized Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins was hospitalized Wednesday after being hit by a car while riding his bike in northern England. Team Sky said Wiggins will be kept in the hospital overnight for observation, but that “the injuries he sustained are not thought to be serious and he is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.” Britain’s Press Association said Wiggins, who also won Olympic gold in the London Games this summer, sustained broken ribs as well as cuts and bruises in the accident. The car reportedly pulled out in front of him from at a gas station.

Awarded Former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne, who will retire as the school’s athletic director Jan. 1, is the recipient of the Walter Camp Football Foundation “Distinguished American” Award. The foundation said that Osborne will receive the award presented to “an individual who has used his or her talents to attain great success in business, private life or public service and who may have accomplished that which no other has done.”

Suspended Missouri senior guard Michael Dixon remains suspended and will not play in the team’s season opener Saturday against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Dixon averaged 13.5 points as the team’s sixth man last season and was expected to be in the starting lineup this year.

Settled Two-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White has reached a deal to settle public intoxication and vandalism charges in Nashville. White appeared in court Wednesday, a day earlier than scheduled, after he and prosecutors agreed to dismiss charges if he completed alcohol treatment, performed 24 hours of community service and paid restitution. Police said White pulled a fire alarm in a Nashville hotel at about 2 a.m. on Sept. 16, forcing all guests to evacuate.

Focusing Skier Lindsey Vonn will skip the first World Cup slalom of the season in Finland this weekend, choosing instead to prepare for home races in Colorado.

Sentenced Former Detroit Tigers OF Delmon Young pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment for shouting an anti-Semitic slur and tackling a man to the ground outside a New York City hotel last spring. Young was ordered to complete 10 days of community service and enroll in a program at the Museum of Tolerance New York.

Postponed Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson has indefinitely postponed her return to the Women’s National Basketball League in Australia because of continuing rehabilitation from a right hamstring injury.
