Plenty of must-sees on tap

Call it post-election stress, midterm madness, daylight savings syndrome, or full-blown football fever, but there are plenty of welcome reasons for the holiday weekend.

Regardless of what ails you, if you’re looking for the cure in the form of live music, the town abounds with options over the weekend as well as throughout the week.

Here’s the prognosis on do-not-miss shows in the coming days:

KYRS Ninth Anniversary Celebration with Son Dulce

When, where: Tonight at 7 at Lincoln Center, 1316 N. Lincoln St.

Spokane’s noncommercial, nonprofit radio station, KYRS Thin Air Community Radio is celebrating nine years of broadcasting alternative views, news and music to Spokane area listeners and online.

Tonight’s anniversary extravaganza features local 10-piece salsa band Son Dulce, appetizers, beer and wine and a silent auction. Get your groove on for a good cause.

Abstract Rude with The Kleenzers, DJ Zole, B Squid, Jaeda, and Pest

When, where: Saturday at 9 p.m. at Carr’s Corner, 230 S. Washington St.

Admission: $7

West Coast indie-rap pioneer and one third of the Haiku D’Etet trio, Abstract Rude has carved out a niche for his crew’s brand of esoteric blue-collar hip-hop. 

After having released 17 albums in various group, solo and side projects since his emergence in the mid-’90s, Rude’s career has also become a pathway for developing younger like-minded artists.

Earlier this week Rude kicked off the fourth installment of his Flow & Tell hip-hop showcase on his home turf in Los Angeles.

Saturday’s bill features Spokane emcee Jaeda, a past collaborator with Rude and his crew.

GWAR with Devil Driver, Cancer Bats, Legacy of Disorder

If you’ve got a taste for blood and metal, don your white jumpsuit and get ready to swim in a pool of it, as the legendary heavy metal gore band Gwar is set to unleash its red rum of theatrics set to thematic, world-conquering headbanging rock. Gwar’s B-movie slasher flick essence is equal parts humor and horror.   

The Devil Makes Three with Johnny Fritz Corndawg

When, where: Wednesday at 8 p.m. at A Club, 416 W. Sprague Ave.

Bluegrass acoustic folk-punk trio The Devil Makes Three has a way of shattering conventions while at the same time honoring timeless institutions. With a blend of influences that blurs genres – including old-time music, country, blues, ragtime and rockabilly – The Devil Makes Three manages to render a sound so disparate it doesn’t easily fit with anything it borrows from.

Together, singer/guitarist Pete Berhard, upright bassist Lucia Turino and singer/guitarist/banjo player Cooper McBean are the rare combination of a band that can ignite a dance party without drums.
