NC boys shine at Nike

Sophomore Tanner Anderson and senior Keith Williams helped guide North Central, running as North Spokane XC Club, to the boys team title for the sixth time in six years at the Nike Cross Northwest meet in Boise.

Anderson placed sixth overall with a time of 15 minutes, 48.9 seconds over 5,000 meters, while Williams placed eighth with a time of 15:53.1. North Spokane easily outdistanced runner-up BraveSouls Running Club 58-113.

Sophomore Spencer Jensen, running for Loyal Sons of Ireland (Central Valley), placed 41st in 16:29.8 and helped CV finish eighth.

North Central senior Katie Knight finished second in the girls 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:40.1. Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier Peak (Wash.) won with a time of 17:29.3.

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch raced to the men’s team title and a second-place showing in the women’s race at the NWAACC Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Spokane’s Plantes Ferry Park.

Jon Smith led a 5-6-7-8 finish by the CCS men, closing in 25:38.83 over 8,000 meters. Daniel Issa was sixth in 25:44.74, Morgan Choate was seventh in 25:51.45 and Jake Hombel placed eighth in 25:52.92.

The Sasquatch men finished with 38 points, 10 better than runner-up Lane CC. Lane’s Elias Gedyon won the individual title in 25:08.62.

CC Spokane’s Sean McLachlan was named the men’s coach of the year.

The women’s race was won by CCS freshman Jessica Mildes in 17:59.65 over 5,000 meters, 40 seconds clear of the field. Freshman Vanessa Church placed sixth for the Sasquatch in 18:55.90.

Everett won the team title 21-58 over CCS.

• The Whitworth Pirates men finished ninth and the women placed 10th at the NCAA West Region Championships in Independence, Ore.

Freshman Chris MacMurray paced the Pirates with a 35th-place showing in 25:43.76 over 8,000 meters.

Sophomore Christina Anderson topped the Whitworth women with a 27th-place finish in 22:25.71 over 6,000 meters.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won both team titles.

Wrestling

North Idaho’s VJ Guilio won the 197-pound division with a 49-second pin in the title match at the Northwest Open tournament in Powell, Wyo.

The Cardinals also received second-place efforts from Jeremy Golding (149), Nico Moreno (157), Kyle Sweedman (174), Caleb Rivera (184) and Bryan Smith (285).

Men’s soccer

Diego Ayala scored a goal in the 53rd minute and Mississippi College (14-5-2) made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over the Whitworth Pirates (13-4-3) in a NCAA Division III tournament opener in San Antonio.

Women’s basketball

The Minnesota Golden Gophers used 49 trips to the free-throw line to hold off the Washington State Cougars 87-83 in double overtime in a season opener in Minneapolis.

Minnesota made 36 free throws on the night, while WSU hit 14 of 18 at the line.

Lia Galdeira set a Cougars freshman record by scoring 33 points on 12-of-27 shooting.

• Kabri Emerson scored a game-high 16 points to lead the North Idaho Cardinals to a 67-55 win over the Dawson Buccaneers in Glendive, Mont.

Women’s soccer

Rainey Pelzel scored a pair of goals and the CC Spokane Sasquatch (15-1-3) breezed to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Whatcom Orcas (11-4-4) in a NWAACC quarterfinal playoff match. CCS will play either Shoreline or Clackamas on Saturday in a semifinal at Seattle.

Men’s basketball

James Webb scored a game-high 18 points to power the North Idaho Cardinals to a 92-59 win over the Dawson Buccaneers in Glendive, Mont.

Volleyball

Felicia Ulrich had 21 kills and 10 digs to power North Dakota (15-14, 10-8) to a 3-1 Big Sky win over the visiting Eastern Washington Eagles (4-25, 4-14).

• Allison Walker and Alyssa Schultz each had 14 kills to propel Idaho (14-13, 12-5) to a 3-1 WAC win over Texas-Arlington (8-19, 4-13) in Moscow, Idaho.

• Amber Tatsch tallied 14 kills and No. 19 San Diego (20-5, 12-3) breezed to a 3-0 win over the host Gonzaga Bulldogs (9-18, 1-13) in WCC play.
