Bulls use so much energy during the fall rut that some of the older male elk struggle to survive through the harsh winter.

Many of the famous geothermal features in the winter are still accessible by simply using snow boots. Other attractions can be reached by snowshoe or cross country skis. Some of paths are cleared.

To save energy, bison use the same trails that the over-snow vehicles use. They sometimes also block the way, allowing for safe viewing and photos from inside the passing vehicle.

Over-snow vehicles allow visitors to experience the interior of Yellowstone including Old Faithful Geyser, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Snow Lodge during the winter. Guided snowmobiles are another seasonal option.

Coyotes are very visible and active in winter. They also have thick, luxurious fur coats to keep them warm.
