WSU plays lowly Waves

Men’s basketball: The competition might not be increasing yet, but Washington State’s first road game of the season could offer a warm-up for what’s to come.

WSU (2-0) travels to Malibu, Calif., to face Pepperdine (0-2) tonight at 7, the only Cougar game this season that won’t be televised.

After an easy 72-49 win over Utah Valley on Wednesday, WSU faces a Pepperdine team coming off losses to Cal State Northridge and California.

The Waves have committed 40 turnovers in their two games this season. They’re led in scoring by sophomore guard Jordan Baker, who averages 14 points per game.

WSU will travel from Malibu to Kansas City, Mo., for a game against Kansas on Monday, followed by a matchup with Texas A&M or Saint Louis.

Team Russia defeats WHL

Junior hockey: Team Russia earned the final edge Thursday as the 10th Subway Super Series wrapped up in Victoria, B.C.

Mikhail Naumen- kov, Andrei Sigarev and Alexander Kho- khlachev had one goal and one assist apiece as Russia defeated a team of Western Hockey League stars 5-2 to complete the six-game set against Canadian Hockey League teams.

Russia and the CHL split the six games, but Russia won the points edge 10-8.

The WHL won 1-0 in a shootout on Wednesday.

Spokane coach Don Nachbaur served as the WHL’s coach, with the Chiefs’ Mitch Holmberg in the lineup.
