Cougars winners in women’s basketball home opener

Carly Noyes scored a career-high 24 points and Tia Presley added 21 – also a career high – as Washington State beat Monmouth 79-69 in the Cougars’ women’s basketball home opener Friday night at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.

WSU freshman guard Lia Galdeira added 11 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and six assists. It was the first double-double by a Cougars freshman since Jazmine Perkins in 2009.

Hana Potter scored nine points in an 11-0 WSU run in the second half. Alysha Womack led Monmouth (0-2) with 25 points.

The Cougars (1-2) host Wisconsin on Sunday.

Whitworth 83, Texas Lutheran 64: Jamie Lyons led four players in double figures with 16 points and the Pirates opened the season with a nonconference win over Texas Lutheran (0-1) in Georgetown, Texas.

Whitworth’s Emily Guthrie hit five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Emily Travis had 12 points and Bethany Fleming chipped in 10.

Portland 62, Idaho 56: The Vandals squandered a 10-point halftime lead and fell to the Pilots (1-2) in a nonconference game at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.

Idaho (0-3) was outscored 41-25 in the second half.

Alyssa Charlston led the Vandals with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

• Lewiston’s Karlee Wilson and Nejra Solo, from Bosnia, joined Mt. Spokane’s Brooke Reilly in signing letters of intent to play for the University of Idaho next season.

Wilson, a 5-foot-4 point guard, was a first-team all-state and first-team all-league selection after guiding the Bengals to the 5A state title last season as a junior.
