Idaho falls in WAC championship

SAN ANTONIO – New Mexico State beat Idaho in four sets in the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship match Wednesday, denying the Vandals their first conference title.

The Aggies beat Idaho 25-20, 20-25, 27-25, 25-19 to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Idaho’s Allison Baker, Janelle Chow and Taylor Wilkinson were named to the all-tournament team.

Baker had 28 kills, 12 digs and two blocks and hit .236 Wednesday, and averaged 5.38 kills and 3.23 digs for the tournament while hitting .204. Katelyn Peterson had 15 kills and hit .317 in the match.

The Vandals (17-14) hit .253 in the match, but NMSU hit .278 and out-blocked the Vandals 10-7 and held a 77-74 advantage in digs. The Aggies also had nine aces in the match, compared to Idaho’s two.

The match was Idaho’s first WAC championship appearance. The 17 wins this season were the most for the Vandals since 2008.
