Camacho remains on life support
Boxing: Hector “Macho” Camacho will be taken off life support, his mother said Friday night, indicating she would have doctors do that today. It was a decision the former championship boxer’s eldest son opposed.
The boxer’s mother, Maria Matias, told reporters outside the hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Camacho lay unconscious since being shot in the face, that she had decided doctors should remove life support, but only after three of his sons arrived in Puerto Rico early today and had a chance to see him a last time.
“I lost my son three days ago. He’s alive only because of a machine,” Matias said. “My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him,” she added.
The three other sons were expected to arrive from the U.S. mainland around midnight Friday. “Until they arrive, we will not disconnect the machine,” Matias said.
Michigan captures NIT Season Tipoff
Men’s college basketball: Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 23 points before he left late in the game after he was kneed in the head, and No. 4 Michigan beat Kansas State 71-57 to win the NIT Season Tipoff in New York. Glenn Robinson III had 12 rebounds, and Trey Burke and Jon Horford had 10 points each for the Wolverines. Hardaway hit 10 of 15 shots before he was hurt with about 4 minutes left.
• Louisville, Duke win semifinals: Luke Hancock scored 19 points and Russ Smith had 18 points and six steals and No. 2 Louisville rolled to an 84-61 victory over No. 13 Missouri in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Cardinals will play Duke in the championship game today. The No. 5 Blue Devils defeated VCU 67-58 in the other semifinal.
• Creighton, ASU reach final in Las Vegas: Doug McDermott had 30 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 14 Creighton past Wisconsin 84-74 for a spot in the Las Vegas Invitational final. Creighton will play Arizona State in the championship game today. The Sun Devils beat Arkansas 83-68.
Harden, Parsons power Rockets’ win
NBA: James Harden scored 33 points, and Chandler Parsons had a career-high 31 to help the Houston Rockets coast to a 131-103 victory over the New York Knicks in Houston. Jeremy Lin added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Houston in the first game against his former team.
• Around the league: Paul Pierce scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half and the Celtics beat Oklahoma City 108-100 in Boston to snap a two-game losing streak. … Wesley Matthews scored 30 points, rookie Damian Lillard had a career-high 28 points and eight assists and the Portland Trail Blazers beat Minnesota 103-95 in Portland. … Rudy Gay scored 21 points, Mike Conley added 19, and Memphis beat the visiting Los Angeles Lakers 106-98 to improve to an NBA-best 9-2. … Tony Parker scored 33 points and San Antonio overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Indiana 104-97 in Indianapolis and improve to 10-3.
McIlroy, two others tied at Dubai
Golf: Rory McIlroy shot a 5-under 67 and was tied for the lead with Luke Donald and Marc Warren after two rounds of the season-ending Dubai World Championship.
McIlroy, the top-ranked golfer, has already won the money titles on the European and PGA tours. He was one stroke in front at 11-under 133 with Donald (68) and 189th-ranked Warren (67).
NFL to examine replay rule
Football: The rule that negated using video replay to confirm a Houston Texans touchdown “may be too harsh” and will be re-examined immediately, NFL director of football operations Ray Anderson said.
Anderson, also co-chairman of the competition committee that suggests rules changes to the owners, said a change could come this season.
Justin Forsett’s third-quarter 81-yard run in the Texans’ 34-31 overtime victory at Detroit on Thursday initially was ruled a touchdown, although replays clearly showed his knee and elbow touched the turf when he was hit by Lions defenders. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz challenged, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the negated use of video replay that is otherwise required for scoring plays.
NHL cancels 2 more weeks, All-Star game
Hockey: More than a third of the NHL regular season and two of its marquee events have now been called off.
The league announced its latest round of cancellations on Friday. All games through Dec. 14 were wiped out, as was All-Star Weekend, scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio. The New Year’s Day outdoor Winter Classic already was scratched.
• Forsberg, Sundin chosen for International Hall: Sweden greats Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin have been named to the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Hall of Fame class for 2013.
The IIHF says the former Olympic and world champions will be inducted in Stockholm in May when Sweden hosts the world championship.
Holcomb races to third straight victory
Bobsled: Steven Holcomb extended his season-opening winning streak to three in World Cup two-man bobsled racing, beating Canada’s Lyndon Rush by 0.04 seconds at Whistler, British Columbia.
Holcomb and push athlete Steve Langton had a two-run time of 1 minute, 45.26 seconds. Rush, teaming with Lascelles Brown, followed in 1:45.30. Germany’s Francesco Friedrich was third in 1:45.60.
