Huskies sweep Cougs in Pac-12 volleyball finale

Kylin Munoz finished with 13 kills Friday and the fifth-ranked Washington Huskies, playing without their star hitter, swept host Washington State 3-0 to complete the Pac-12 Conference volleyball regular season.

The Huskies (23-6, 14-6), who won 25-15, 25-17, 25-22 without standout sophomore Krista Vansant (sprained ankle), will learn their NCAA tournament at-large assignment on Sunday.

Jaicee Harris had seven kills for the Cougars (13-19, 3-17), who had nine fewer aces and seven fewer blocks than UW.

A season-high crowd of 1,289 attended at Bohler Gym.

Women’s basketball

(11) California 91, Eastern Washington 58: Talia Caldwell tied for game-high honors with 15 points and added a game-best nine rebounds to help the Golden Bears (4-0) defeat the Eagles (1-3) in the California Classic at Berkeley, Calif.

Gennifer Brandon also scored 15 for California, hitting 7 of 11 field goals while playing just 18 minutes. Cal finished with a 39-17 rebounding advantage.

The Eagles held a six-point lead after 6 minutes and trailed just 43-37 at halftime after shooting 58 percent from the field. The Golden Bears shot 20 of 30 from the floor in the second half while EWU shot 8 of 24.

Aubrey Ashenfelter, Chenise Pakootas and Laura Hughes scored 12 points apiece for the Eagles, shooting a combined 14 of 24 from the field.

California is 4-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 team began 7-0.

Whitworth 67, Occidental 62: Junior forward Kendra Lahue totaled career highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds to lift the Pirates (3-0) over the Tigers (1-1) at Pasadena, Calif.

Lahue shot 6 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 6 on 3-pointers. The Pirates’ Emily Travis added 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. The Tigers’ Makenzie Brandon (Seattle Academy) had 32 points and 14 rebounds.

North Idaho 62, Gillette (Wyo.) 56: The second-ranked Cardinals (6-0) held off the 11th-ranked Pronghorns (8-1) to open the Lions Club tournament at Sheridan, Wyo.

Men’s basketball

CC Spokane 86, Southwest Oregon 72: Kwinn Hanson scored 23 points, hitting 8 of 8 from the floor and 7 of 9 from the line in less than 17 minutes of play, as the Sasquatch (1-0) defeated the Lakers (1-1) in a Red Devil Classic opener at Longview, Wash.

Stefan Buratto added 16 points for CCS, which shot 19 of 34 from the field in the second half.

CCS will meet host Lower Columbia at 8 tonight in the semifinals.
