No. 5 Duke edges No. 2 Louisville

College Basketball: Quinn Cook scored 11 of his 15 points in the final 7:46, including No. 5 Duke’s last eight of the game, and the Blue Devils beat No. 2 Louisville 76-71 on Saturday night in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.

Neither team led by more than four points over the final 10 minutes until Cook’s second free throw with 6.7 seconds left made it 76-71.

The sophomore point guard had six assists and just four turnovers against Louisville’s pressure defense. He was 4 for 8 from the field and 6 of 6 from the line.

Mason Plumlee had 16 points for Duke (6-0).

Peyton Siva had 19 points for the Cardinals (5-1) and Russ Smith added 17.

• Missouri gets past VCU: Laurence Bowers had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Phil Pressey had 11 points and eight assists, leading No. 13 Missouri to a 68-65 victory over VCU in the third-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.

Pressey gave the Tigers (5-1) the lead for good with a 3-pointer with 1:17 to play. That capped a run of five straight possessions where the teams exchanged the lead.

The Rams (3-3) turned the ball over with 57 seconds left. The Tigers called a timeout with 10 seconds left on the shot clock. Pressey took the inbounds, dribbled off a few seconds then made a move to the basket where he ducked under a VCU player and hit a flip shot as the shot clock hit zero.

• Bennett helps UNLV beat Iowa State: Freshman Anthony Bennett scored 22 points and No. 18 UNLV beat Iowa State 82-70 in the consolation game of the Global Sports Classic in Las Vegas.

UNLV (3-1) began to pull away late in the second half. After Will Clyburn’s tip-in at 7:24 cut Iowa State’s deficit to 57-54, the Rebels closed the game with a 25-16 run.

Anthony Marshall added 16 points for the Rebels, and Mike Moser had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

• Charleston pulls off upset at Baylor: Willis Hall scored six consecutive points for the College of Charleston to break the final tie and the Cougars held on for a 63-59 upset at 24th-ranked Baylor in Waco, Texas.

Hall had 12 points, with eight free throws. The last came with 2.4 seconds left after grabbing a rebound.

Pierre Jackson’s 21 points led Baylor (4-2), which had won 29 consecutive home games against nonconference teams.

Miami uses late rally to put away Cavaliers

NBA: Ray Allen took a pass from LeBron James and made a 3-pointer with 18.2 seconds left, and the Miami Heat rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 1:52 to beat the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers 110-108.

James finished with 30 points for the Heat, who remained perfect at home despite leading for only 2 minutes, 29 seconds. Chris Bosh scored 23 points, Dwyane Wade added 18 and Allen finished with 17 for the Heat, who lost Shane Battier in the third quarter to a sprained right knee.

Cleveland had a good look at the lead, but Wade blocked Jeremy Pargo’s jumper with 3 seconds left, and Allen added one free throw to stretch the lead to two.

• Durant, Westbrook lead Thunder over 76ers: Kevin Durant scored 37 points, Russell Westbrook had 30 and the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Philadelphia 76ers 116-109 in overtime.

Serge Ibaka added 18 points for the defending Western Conference champions, who’ve won nine of 11 to go to 10-4.

Thad Young had a season-high 29 points and career-high 15 for Philadelphia.

• Hawks tops Clippers: Jeff Teague had 19 points and 11 assists, Zaza Pachulia added 19 points and 12 rebounds, and the host Atlanta Hawks won their fifth straight game with a 104-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Clippers’ Blake Griffin scored 22 points and Chris Paul had 19. Los Angeles has lost a season-high three consecutive games after winning six in a row.

• Bynum out indefinitely: Andrew Bynum is out indefinitely and there’s no timetable set for his first game with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The All-Star center was acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-team trade before the season.

McIlroy, Donald share Championship lead

Golf: Rory McIlroy sank a short birdie putt on the 18th hole to remain tied with Luke Donald as the world’s two top-ranked golfers pulled three shots clear of a star-studded field after the third round of the Dubai World Championship.

The top-ranked McIlroy, who has already wrapped up the European and PGA Tour money titles, struggled early. But he improved on the back nine, sinking a 30-foot eagle putt on 14 to go with three birdies for a 6-under 66.

Donald also had a 66 and is tied with McIlory with a 17-under total of 199.

Maze wins slalom race, Vonn takes 21st

Winter Sports: Tina Maze of Slovenia has won her second straight World Cup giant slalom race, while an exhausted Lindsey Vonn finished 21st in Aspen, Colo.

Maze had a combined two-run time of 1 minute, 59.39 seconds.

Vonn was 10th after the first run, but didn’t have anything left for the second pass through the challenging course. The four-time overall champion wasn’t sure if she was even going to compete in Aspen this weekend because of a stomach bug that landed her in the hospital.

• Svindal takes downhill: Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal won the season-opening World Cup men’s downhill, beating Austria’s Max Franz by 0.64 seconds in Lake Louise, Alberta.

• Freund claims ski jump opener: Severin Freund of Germany won the season-opening ski jump World Cup event for the third individual victory of his career in Lillehammer, Norway.

In the women’s event, Sara Takanashi of Japan scored 265.2 points to win ahead of American defending overall champion Sarah Hendrickson, who had 261.4.

• Zubkov wins at Whistler: Russia’s Alexander Zubkov raced to his third straight World Cup four-man bobsled victory, beating teammate Alexander Kasjanov by 0.24 seconds in Whistler, British Columbia.

American Steven Holcomb finished fourth a day after winning the two-man event.

• Hanyu headed to Grand Prix final: Japanese teenager Yuzuru Hanyu has won the NHK Trophy title in Sendai, Japan, capturing the free skate to secure a place in next month’s Grand Prix final.

Bolt named World Athlete of the Year

Miscellany: Usain Bolt has won the IAAF World Athlete of the Year award for the fourth time over United States hurdler Aries Merritt and Kenyan runner David Rudisha.

The Jamaican sprinter, who defended his 100 and 200 meter gold medals at this summer’s Olympic Games, also won the award in 2008, 2009, and 2011.

• Hatton loses comeback fight: Ricky Hatton’s first fight after more than three years in retirement ended in disappointment when Vyacheslav Senchenko stopped the British star in the ninth round.

The 34-year-old Hatton succumbed to a painful body shot from the Ukrainian welterweight in a non-title fight in his home city of Manchester.
