3 Eagles tabbed All-Americans

College football: The initial NCAA Football Championship Subdivision All-America team for the 2012 season was released by College Sports Madness and three players from Eastern Washington were selected.

Junior wide receiver Brandon Kaufman was named to the first team, senior defensive end Jerry Ceja was selected to the second team and senior kicker Jimmy Pavel picked on the third team.

Kaufman (pictured above) has 65 catches for 1,270 yards (19.5 yards per catch) and 10 touchdowns, including career highs of 10 catches for 192 yards against Southern Utah on Oct. 27. The first-team All-Big Sky receiver is coming off a nine-catch, 161-yard game at Portland State Nov. 17.

Kaufman, a 2010 All-American, leads the Big Sky and ranks fifth in FCS in receiving yards per game (115.5), and his 10 TD receptions are ninth in FCS.

This is the first of nine FCS All-America teams.

Eastern plays host to Wagner from Staten Island, N.Y., at 3:05 p.m. Saturday in a second-round game of the FCS playoffs.

Zags up to 12th; Harris honored

Men’s basketball: One day after winning the Old Spice Classic, Gonzaga University got the attention of the national pollsters, and forward Elias Harris the attention of the West Coast Conference.

The Bulldogs, who ran their record to 6-0, are ranked 12th in the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls, while Harris was tabbed the WCC Player of the Week.

Harris, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound senior from Speyer, Germany, scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds – the 23rd double-double of his career – against Davidson College in leading the Bulldogs to their second Old Spice Classic Championship. The first came in 2008.
