Nearly 1,000 inmates with serious medical and mental health problems are kept at the Federal Medical Center in the Butner complex. According to a report released Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 and co-authored by Human Rights Watch, the per capita cost of caring for a prisoner in such a medical center in 2010 was $40,760, compared to the federal prison system�s overall per capita cost of $25,627.
