Point guard tweets ‘WSU’

Basketball: The Washington State men’s team appears to have found a future solution to its lack of depth at point guard.

Ikenna Iroegbu, a 6-foot-2 point guard out of Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, announced on his Twitter page Sunday that he has given a verbal commitment to play for the Cougars in 2013-14.

“Just committed to the zzu!! #WSU…” Iroegbu wrote.

Iroegbu is rated a 3-star prospect by Scout.com, which touts his athleticism and quickness, as well as his ball-handling skills.

Iroegbu’s older brother, Chuks, walked on to the WSU team last season but transferred at the end of the year to pursue other opportunities. They are from Elk Grove, Calif. According to Scout.com, the younger Iroegbu held offers from Memphis, Virginia Tech and the College of Charleston.

The Cougars are without a true point guard this season after senior Reggie Moore, the Pac-12’s assists leader last season, was dismissed from the team last week for an undisclosed violation of team policy.

Marlins give Greenberg shot

Baseball: Adam Greenberg is expected to make a pinch-hit appearance for the Miami Marlins today.

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen had previously stated he was considering starting Greenberg in the outfield and batting leadoff for his one at-bat, but has since decided he will insert him in today’s game against the New York Mets at some point.

Greenberg has been in the national spotlight when the Marlins announced last week that they would sign the 31-year-old to a one-day contract so he could receive one at-bat after getting hit in the head in his Major League debut seven years ago.

Greenberg made his big league debut on July 9, 2005, with the Chicago Cubs and was hit in the head by a pitch thrown by Marlins lefty Valerio De Los Santos in his only plate appearance.
