Two Eagles earn honors

Eastern Washington’s football win over Montana on Saturday at Roos Field in Cheney earned two of the principals in the comeback victory special honors on Monday.

Quarterback Vernon Adams, who shook off an interception and a fumble in the fourth quarter with two touchdown passes in the final 2:19 to produce the 32-26 win, was named The Sports Network co-Freshman of the Week in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision and earned a Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor.

Adams completed 25 of 41 passes for 353 yards and three TDs in his second career start and rushed for a team-high 54 yards.

One of Adams’ prime targets, wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, who caught eight passes for 138 yards and two TDs, also received a Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week award.

The victory helped the Eagles (3-1) retain seventh place in both The Sports Network Top 25 and FCS Coaches polls.

Men’s golf

A pair of 3-under-par 69s gave Whitworth freshman Lyle Rudnicki a 138 and medalist honors by three strokes in the Whitman Invitational that wound up Monday at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.

And it led the Pirates to a 10-stroke victory over Puget Sound, 576-586.

Whitworth had two others in the top 10, Oliver Rudnicki (145) tied for eighth and Samson Martinez (146) tied for 10th.

• Cole Lorenzo of Community Colleges of Spokane shot 69-74 for 143, placing second by a stroke, to lead the Sasquatch to a second straight team title, 602-616 over Green River in the Centralia Invitational. Ben Vandenberg shot 152 for CCS.

Women’s golf

Whitworth senior Emily Guthrie claimed medalist honors with a 4-over-par 150, finishing with a 76 Monday at Spokane Country Club, to lead the Pirates to second place in the Whitworth Invitational.

Whitman won the team title, 639-655 over Whitworth. The Pirates’ Ashley Danforth tied for fifth at 162. Alyssa Maine (Freeman), a Whitman freshman, was one of five Missionaries in the top 10, shooting 165.

North Idaho College tied for fifth in the seven-team field at 723. The Cardinals’ Chelsea Porter was 15th with a 172.

• CCS finished fourth behind champion Southwest Oregon in the Central Invitational led by the 193 of Cindy Pitkin (Moscow, Idaho) and the 198 of Brigid Rypien (North Central).

Volleyball

Allison (Walker) Baker, the Idaho junior who had a career-high 29 kills in a four-set win over Texas-San Antonio, was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time in her career.

She also had 10 digs and four blocks for her 11th double-double of the season after a 19-kill, 12-dig performance in a 3-2 Vandals victory over Texas State earlier in the week.
